Didn't see a thread here, but it's up. Per MacRumors:

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/...iphone-2-2-1-firmware/

Apple has released a 2.2.1 update for the iPhone today. Available from iTunes, the update relays the following improvements:
iPhone 2.2.1 Software Update

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
- Improved general stability of Safari
- Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

Products compatible with this software update:
- iPhone
- iPhone 3G

A 2.2.1 update for the iPod Touch is also available.

I'm updating my iPod Touch 2G now.

I'm jailbroken, so I'm holding off. Thanks for the heads up though!

interesting, I can't find any info on what's new for the Touch though, gotta be something or there'd be no update for it.

probably allows for ppl to jailbreak with 10.5.6 once the dev team gets around to it.

wait, are you saying Apple updated the firmware to make it easier for the Dev Team to jailbrake it? That doesn't sound right to me 🙂

This update really makes me upset. I mean I know something's gotta be happening to apple but I mean first we get a lack luster final macworld and now a January Iphone update that fixes two things which people aren't really even asking for. I mean cmon apple the Iphone has been out for almost 2 years and we still dont have common basic features!

Well, I didn't specifically 'ask' for it, but any time they can increase the stability of Safari, that's great! Also, even though I haven't had the specific Mail problem that's supposed to be fixed, it doesn't mean it's not there and affecting other people's experience with the device. They are probably pretty glad it's fixed now.

Granted, it's no copy/paste or MMS, but it's not a bad thing either.

It wouldn't surprise me if copy/paste & MMS were either never released, or tied to the next iPhone hardware revision coming out in June. Gotta keep people buying!

You aren't kidding. I didn't get the original iPhone because I was locked into a Verizon contract. When the 3G came out, I figured it was only a matter of time before those two features were added. I seemed to forget that it had already been over a year since the original iPhone's release. I'll admit that I'll feel pretty duped if those basic features are tied to a new hardware revision.

However, even if they were, I'd like to think that previous generations of the phone could get the update for free, much like the transition from 1.x to 2.0.

I'd guess the former. They're so obsessive about Ease of Use and Look/Feel that they won't implement Copy/Paste unless it's easy and intuitive.

I haven't used any of the Jailbreak solutions in almost a year, but back then, it wasn't up to Apple's level of elegance.

cool, I'll wait until the next major release...pointless incremental!

I can see not being in a hurry to update to an incremental release but why would you go out of your way to not upgrade? What do you have to lose?

at worst I see it being a paid firmware update. I upgraded my 1G Touch to 2.0 for $10. Free would have been awesome, but I was more than happy to drop the $ to get the update. No way in hell Apple will release a new iPhone/Touch with cut + paste where the 1g/2g don't have some sort of new firmware to support it.

You can lose your Jailbreak, or the ability to unlock your iPhone for sale later. This 2.2.1 update permanently updates the iPhone 3G baseband which means no unlock at the moment. iPhone V1 baseband is not affected by the 2.2.1 update.

I still can't find a list of whats been changed on the Touch, but if there's a new Quickpwn I might update it and find out.

I did the update and then used quickpwn. So far everything works great. OF course I have no plans to ever unlock my phone. I love ATT's service around here. They are the only 3g around right now.

weaksauce. I'm still glad they're updating though. Iphone will be complete to me once they get copy and paste. I could care less about MMS since you can still email. There's no way around copy and paste without jailbreaking though.

I didn't notice right away because I live in a 3g coverage area but over the weekend I was on edge and noticed that I kept getting connection errors when I tried to check my mail. The last time I was on edge before I updated, I didn't notice this happening. I use MobileMe and was wondering if anyone else had noticed this???

Yea.. I'm trying to get away from txting.. too expensive. I bought BeeJive and that's what I'm mainly using for IM and that has voice, pics, txt.. etc.. great app. Works very well.

I do want Copy & Paste and FLV support. We'll see when/if we ever get those.
