Ok so this seems like its should be really simple, but I can't seem to figure it out. If I download an application or game via iTunes how to I transfer it over to my phone? The only answer I have been able to find is to use the syncing feature which doesn't work at all...

When syncing it seems to randomly check off applications throughout the list rather than checking the ones which are already installed on the phone by default. This means I would need to go through each and individual application individually or risk having one of them deleted from the device. Also every time I sync the device it seems to re-arrange my icons completely at random. Sometimes it will even leave a blank home screen in the middle, or remove applications from the folders I've put them in.

Sounds like you have a problem with iTunes. You should troubleshoot iTunes.

Why don't you just download it via the AppStore app for the iPhone?

Because downloading over Wi-Fi from the App Store is far slower than downloading on My PC, especially when I already have the app saved in my library.

Apple should try making iTunes not a piece of garbage.

iTunes has grown outside of its original programming. They need to trim this sucker back and create a new standalone syncing utility before iTunes becomes self aware and begins to thirst for human blood.

I have been using it for like 8 years now or something, so for me it about familiarity, as well as preferring to have it manage my shit for me at the end of the day.

OK, let's start from square 1 then. When you plug in the iPad, what happens.

I think I'm too post-PC. The last time I hooked my iPhone or iPad up to a computer was to load iOS 5. The time before that was to load iOS 4.3. The time before that... well, you get the idea.

But in the dark days, when I had decided to try and back up my app store on my computer, I never had a problem hooking it up and transferring over one app, as long as I kept my PC and iPhone in constant sync. Maybe you should consider setting up the iTunes wifi sync instead of iCloud so that your iPhone and iTunes on your computer stay in better sync.

You probably could have just downloaded the Apps via WiFi, for all the time spent trying to troubleshoot something like this. I just find it more convenient to go to my purchased Apps list on each device, and only download the Apps I want. I like iTunes as my music manager, but it doesn't seem too convenient for managing Apps, and they are just wasting a lot of hard drive space...

I haven't really updated any games other than on my apple products themselves, so I couldn't really help you in that. But I will agree that iTunes needs a lot of work. I have also been using it many years and I hate all the crap that runs with it. I only still use it because I haven't found anything better than that.

I just ran into a similar situation yesterday for my daughter, it was downloaded on the PC and in her library but wouldn't transfer. Come to find out it was because the iOS version on her ipod was lower than required for the game, so I would start looking at that type of thing.

I sadly learned that my sister-in-law, father-in-law and mother-in-law all have 3GS or better, yet are still running iOS 4.x.

I am so ashamed.

Buy an app via his computer and then try to sync it to his iPhone?

That seems wildly odd to you?

MotionMan

Yes.

1. Go to phone, check Settings -> Store -> Automatic Downloads -> Apps -> On
2. Go to iTunes, buy apps all day long
3. Wait until app hits phone

At least, I would ASSUME this works; I haven't touched iTunes to do a sync since wireless syncing came into being.

Those are 2 different ways of doing the same thing.

I use both methods as I sometimes find finding apps easier on my desktop.

Well, it prevents this:
