They're saying the iPhone HD is going to replace the AppleTV, and you'll be able to stream movies via Wifi using Bonjour on your home network, end result being you plunk your iPhone/iTouch down on a dock, grab your Apple Remote, and stream your movies and music to your HDTV. The docking kit will be less than $100.

Several things don't ring true for me in that article.

First, AppleTV sales have been increasing not decreasing. There wouldn't seem to be a reason to discontinue it. Plus, Apple is about maximum profit. Why would they offer a sort of all in one iPhone/iPod Touch when they can sell you an AppleTV as well?

Also, HD content would require a protected path wouldn't it? The cable they described isn't using HDMI or even DVI with HDCP so HD output probably wouldn't be allowed by Apple's content partners.

I could see a new iPhone/iPod Touch get HD capability but only because they then wouldn't have to provide a separate lower resolution download when you make a purchase in the iTunes store. As I understand it, currently if you purchase an HD TV show you get an HD version and a SD version.

If Apple offered an iPod HD, then it would make sense that they would convert their A/V cables to HDMI with HDCP. Since Zune is going HD and the rest of the world is, it makes perfect sense for the iPod to go HD and thus for the video output to go HD. Imagine Apple saying, your iPod can play HD, but you can't output it to HD, sorry! I think that would scare off a lot of customers, no? :D

How could it play HD? The last gen mac mini could barely do it. Also, why would the iPod even be capable of it? It's not gonna have a 1920x1080 4" screen...

And I don't think the Zune is going HD... it's just called a Zune HD (someone correct me if I'm wrong please).

But it's so much fun to speculate :D

I dunno, the Popcorn Hour does 1080p output and it's pretty small. Mr. Jobs, I want that it an iPhone package with 24-hour battery life, kthx ;)

The problem with that is that HD video files are still pretty damn big. The 720p stuff Apple distributes is around 4Mbps, or a gigabyte for a hour-long (42 minute) show. The storage capacity on iPods/iPhones isn't big enough to make that irrelevant yet.

I agree with Tegeril, this rumor is ridiculous.

I'm still shocked Apple hasn't put out a new AppleTV with a 9300M for the chipset. That would allow them to fully offload decoding, and go straight to 1080P. The price of the chipset may be holding them back however.

I think Anand's last article about the nVidia Ion platform shows how ridiculous this is. If a 9400 chipset+a single core Atom CPU chokes on 1080p content, there's no way in hell that the next iPhone/iPod Touch will be able to do it.
