iPhone GPS Navigation App - as good as a stand-alone car GPS?

Motion X GPS is good if I have a car. But Apple Map is good enough for me because it comes with buses information.

The routing on the Garmin was good. I do not have the car kit. Wish I did - I need a gooseneck suction cup for my windshield!

Speaking of which... I recently bought this windshield mount, and it's absolutely fantastic.

Best part? Doesn't matter if you have a case on. There's two cradles, one for a caseless iphone, the other is more of a universal one that clamps the phone in place. Very sturdy and doesn't damage the phone at all.

I've been using the Tomtom app ever since it first came out. Didnt care for the other GPS apps. Accuracy was crap on the 3GS but has been great on the 4/4s. Works great with the traffic feature as well - standalone GPS units are now officially dead to me.

The only caveat is that you MUST have it plugged in whenever you use a GPS app - they just hammer on your battery.

I personally use a proclip dock so it's right on my dash, and it's connected to the power and audio via a single cable. So all I do is slide the phone in when I get in the car and I'm good. Usually just throw on pandora and then flip to Tomtom to pick me a good route home. The proclip mount is a little expensive but worth it for the clean install and simplicity.

navigon rocks on my ipad1 and htc flyer. not quite as good as the built in bmw navigation since that can interrupt calls (only i hear the direction) and fade the loud music to speak directions . otherwise good stuff.

I tried Motion X GPS on my daily commute home, and the routing was terrible. I have it set to give me the fastest route, yet the route it gave me would've added another 10 minutes on my 35 minute commute.

I'll give it another chance, being 99 cents and all, but that was just severely disappointing.

Yea, I figure I'll drop the $40 or whatever for the TomTom or Garmin apps. Not sure which one, but leaning towards TomTom.

I've used Navigon for about a year now on a 4 and 4S. Since the update to 2.0, I've been a lot happier. The UI is much easier to navigate with the phone in a mount and they seem to have made the routing a lot better. Sometimes I fire up the app even when I know where I'm going to see what it does. Since the update, it's usually in line with the way I'd take.

I have an Alpine HU in my car and it has a USB connection. It actually works better than I expected. Music is muted when the app is giving a direction and pauses for phone calls. I don't have a headset because I usually just ignore calls when using GPS and don't use my phone while driving anyways. I would imaging a headset would take care of that one issue though.
