Iphone FW 2.2: Passwords show before the * pops up

on my iphone 3g w/ FW 2.2, whenever i try to type in the password to any type of form, the last letter i typed shows before it turns into a * when i type the next letter. this makes it very easy for anyone looking at my phone to see any password i'm typing. how do i fix this?

It is not a bug. It's a feature!

(BTW, it is the way it is SUPPOSE to work)

As others have said, its so you can make sure your typing the right password. If someone is that close they can see the letters you press anyway.

This is the reason why you should have secure passwords as well. If you're using passwords like "dog" or even "truetest2009", etc... those are going to be easy for people to remember.

Also, what kind of people are you letting look over your shoulder like that, that you're worried will steal your passwords?

You could also use 1Password, or a similar app for the iPhone so you can use secure passwords on your sites and then just remember one long secure password.

well is there a way to disable this feature? i ride the subway in NYC a lot and there a strangers constantly next to me. i feel that reading my password directly on the screen is MUCH MUCH easier than them trying to read the key i am typing on that small iphone keypad

Yea.. at the moment there isn't a way to change that. How many times are you honestly typing a password? I very rarely have to type a password on my phone.

Use Mint. It give you a read only view of all your accounts, without having to type passwords (after you set it up at mint.com).

WHOA.. I wouldn't recommend that ever. I just think that's not a great idea. Always do banking in a safe secure area. Typically at home, on a network that is HEAVILY protected and administered by you.

Just a recommendation... 🙂

well that is just an example of what i think is a flaw in the "design" of showing the letters of each password i type on the iphone.

and i dont think logging onto my checking account to see if my deposits went through are a big deal. theres even an App made by Chase for download on the iphone

I would never look at such things on my phone in a crowded (or even not so crowded) public place.

Wait to do your banking until you get home or to the office. Will that amount of time really make a difference as to whether you know if your deposits went through?

I know this does not address your issue with the interface, but it solves your real problem.

well lets stick on topic:

lets scratch that bank info example and say, my email passwords, my anandtech password, my ebay password... etc....

is there any way to disable this "feature" that shows ur passwords to onlookers?

No.

And, IMO, the bank info example applies to anything you would need to enter a password for: You should not do it in a public place/where someone can see it or you should do it in such a way that others cannot see it.

Maybe the subway is just not a great place to conduct such activities.

you probably dont live in NYC where people take the subway for hours on a daily basis to commute. if you lived here you'd feel that showing the letters of each password you type is a FLAW

I do not live in NYC, but I did take the subway to and from high school, so I guess I am still qualified to discuss the subject.

People have been riding the subway for hours without checking their bank balance, e-mail and latest neff thread for many years without issue. If you are that concerned about privacy, then you may want to NOT conduct certain business on your iPhone, regardless of the password issue or how long you are on the subway. Either that, or, if you absolutely have to conduct private business on the subway, cover the screen when you type the password.

(IMO, it is easier to watch the keyboard as each letter is typed since each one pops up nice and big (bigger than in the password screen), but I guess that is not as big of an issue for you.)

Install one password, put your passwords in it. Sync that to the iphone 1password app. Then open that app up, type in your 4 digit code and find the site you want to open. Click on the link there and it will open the site and log you in. Problem solved.

Now you're just being pissy. I mean, we've said it numerous times that it isn't possible to turn this off right now.. so those really are your only options.

Just put your iPhone in a large tube sock, hold the tube sock to your eye and type your password through a hole in the bottom of the tube sock.

Problem solved.

And dude, it's not a problem, you're being stupid about it.
