Hey guys,

Doing a research project for my university, creating a theoretical case for the iPhone called iNewton. It basically uses a pretty novel technology to increase impact protection with no extra thickness. It would help me out a ton if you guys could take a minute to answer the following questions. iPhone users only please. Thanks all.

1) Who bought your phone? (You or ____ )
a) If you broke it, who would replace it? (only if bought by someone else)
b) How interested are you in buying a case to protect your phone
a. Why?
b. (if not already answered) Did you buy Apple Care protection?

2) How interesting would a case that provides some water resistance – including protection against drops in shallow puddles or exposure to rain – be to you?
a. How much more would you pay for such a case if it came in a sleek design?

3) How interested would you be in a case that uses a revolutionary new material which hardens upon impact, providing significant drop protection in a comfortable and form-fitting, minimalist design?
4) What price would you pay for a case that provided the above features – casual water resistance and significant drop protection - in a comfortable, thin, and minimalist case that didn’t break the aesthetics of the iPhone?

Thanks everyone!

a. Why? Hides beauty of phone. Adds thickness.
b. (if not already answered) Did you buy Apple Care protection? No

2) How interesting would a case that provides some water resistance – including protection against drops in shallow puddles or exposure to rain – be to you? Maybe
a. How much more would you pay for such a case if it came in a sleek design? $29

3) How interested would you be in a case that uses a revolutionary new material which hardens upon impact, providing significant drop protection in a comfortable and form-fitting, minimalist design? Not much.
4) What price would you pay for a case that provided the above features – casual water resistance and significant drop protection - in a comfortable, thin, and minimalist case that didn’t break the aesthetics of the iPhone? $39

1) Who bought your phone? me
a) If you broke it, who would replace it? (only if bought by someone else)
b) How interested are you in buying a case to protect your phone Have one, Very interested
a. Why? Fairly clumsy, don't care about what the phone looks like too much, mostly care about function
b. (if not already answered) Did you buy Apple Care protection? no, but may still. undetermined

2) How interesting would a case that provides some water resistance – including protection against drops in shallow puddles or exposure to rain – be to you? not terribly, I don't use my phone outside too much, especially not when it's wet
a. How much more would you pay for such a case if it came in a sleek design? perhaps $5 additional to base case cost

3) How interested would you be in a case that uses a revolutionary new material which hardens upon impact, providing significant drop protection in a comfortable and form-fitting, minimalist design? very
4) What price would you pay for a case that provided the above features – casual water resistance and significant drop protection - in a comfortable, thin, and minimalist case that didn’t break the aesthetics of the iPhone? $30ish

Thanks everyone!

I have a switcheasy case - the rebel. Might get the minimalist clear case next as I like variety.

b) How interested are you in buying a case to protect your phone I have one.
a. Why? Protect from scratches mostly.
b. (if not already answered) Did you buy Apple Care protection? No.

2) How interesting would a case that provides some water resistance – including protection against drops in shallow puddles or exposure to rain – be to you? If it does not add bulk, I would be somewhat interested.
a. How much more would you pay for such a case if it came in a sleek design? If it did not add bulk, and was otherwise equal in look and features as another product, I would not pay any more for it.

3) How interested would you be in a case that uses a revolutionary new material which hardens upon impact, providing significant drop protection in a comfortable and form-fitting, minimalist design? If it does not add bulk, I would be interested.
4) What price would you pay for a case that provided the above features – casual water resistance and significant drop protection - in a comfortable, thin, and minimalist case that didn’t break the aesthetics of the iPhone? No more than it cost me to get my invisibleSHIELD by ZAGG.

Thanks everyone!

You're welcome.

Thanks to everyone who posted. We're working hard on this thing, last deliverable is in April, and then depending on how strong our product looks by that time, it may develop further. If anything happens, I'll personally send each of you who helped a production model for s&h. You can mark this post for that. But of course chances are slim and competition is high. Wish us luck please and keep posting :)!

P.S: I'm actually an old member of this forum, profile got killed in the forum switchover.

Did this change from a university project to a business venture?

It would help me out a ton if you guys could take a minute to answer the following questions. iPhone users only please. Thanks all.

1) Who bought your phone? (You or ____ )
- Me
a) If you broke it, who would replace it? (only if bought by someone else)
- Me
b) How interested are you in buying a case to protect your phone
- Always have a case
a. Why?
- Protection
b. (if not already answered) Did you buy Apple Care protection?
- No, I'll probably be upgrading when a new phone releases.

2) How interesting would a case that provides some water resistance – including protection against drops in shallow puddles or exposure to rain – be to you?
a. How much more would you pay for such a case if it came in a sleek design?
- $10-15

3) How interested would you be in a case that uses a revolutionary new material which hardens upon impact, providing significant drop protection in a comfortable and form-fitting, minimalist design?
- Seems about what I'd want, but as long as it had full protection (atleast some surface of the case on the screen side)

4) What price would you pay for a case that provided the above features – casual water resistance and significant drop protection - in a comfortable, thin, and minimalist case that didn’t break the aesthetics of the iPhone?
- $30-40, if its made well $50.

Thanks everyone!

Seems like you're heading in the right direction, I was recently thinking about buying a new case, probably a SwitchEasy Rebel.

1) Me
a) Me
b) Not very much
- already had "the best one" - Rebel Serpent
- no
2) Not very much / wouldn't pay more
3) Now I'm interested, a bit :)
4) 40€ tops

I bought a SwitchEasy Rebel Serpent. It looked great and protected my iPhone very good. However, it made the phone bigger than necessary, to a point where it looked bulky (and the extra size was the reason I dropped it.... twice). However, the material felt very sturdy, made the phone look cool too... in a way. But the moment I stopped using the case, it was like getting a new phone (good for me, bad for the case :p). I love the iPhone best without any extra cases or protectors. It slides in my pocket nicely, fits my hands just right and with no ridges I can easily use the whole screen (was kinda tricky on the edges with the Serpent sometimes).

hello kitty from apple store exclusive - $40
$2 cheapie from ebay - silver
(same thing; clip on)
both work great - not too bulky and have saved a few drops so far.

I just wanted to quickly thank everyone for chiming in. I don't have anything to offer you from the results of the project, but if you let me know you posted here, I'll cut you a deal in my upcoming FS thread. Posting up i7 920 parts (mobo, ram, cpu, psu). Also have FW900 for local pickup (possibly).
