It's weird how stuff like this gets so overblown. There were 30ish note 7 battery failures out of over 2 million units and that caused a recall! 5 or so of these out of several million units sold and it is turning into a major story!

News media loves making it a bigger story than it actually is. There were probably more serious defects several generations of smart phones ago that didnt receive publication. I think most of this overblown media hype started when fatass people started bending the iphone 5. The Note 7 fiasco, while i loved my note 7, was the only legit overreact because it potentially could cause major damage.

And the fact that these iphone 8 batteries just swelled up imo indicates a much better designed battery than the explody ones in the note 7. A couple of years ago my mid-2009 MBP's battery swelled up after not being used in about a year. Popped the trackpad right out. I simply changed out the battery and popped the trackpad right in. No explosions.

Odd you say that, apparently apple are using the same Chinese manufacturer Samsung used for the Note7 batteries (that samsung subsequently has stopped doing business with); Amperex.

No explosions is explained by the lower TDP of the device. I'd be willing to bet they'd happily explode if you threw the same sort of power draw components the Note7 had.

Two different companies from what I can tell.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and Amperex Technology Limited (ATL).

ATL being majority owned by TDK. CATL still being majority chinese owned.

There isn't a ton of battery makers out there...
AFAIK, the batteries in the Apple aren't quite the same.

If they all just stop trying to build these things thinner & thinner, and go back to user replaceable batteries, we wouldn't have this kind of a mess.
