iPhone 6s VS 5-SE

My iPhone 5 is feaking out. First thing wrong with it is the sleep/lock button. Doesn't work and isn't eligible for repair. That's been on the fritz for almost a half year.. as of late it seems the screen is acting up. Not sure what happened. Buttons don't respond, the phone basically locks up for 30 seconds sometimes. I'm in the market for a new phone. Is there anything the 5-SE doesn't have in terms of functionality and performance VS the 6s?

Thanks

Yes, 3D touch. And it's a huge loss of function, despite that you may not think it is.

Hmmm. I'm on a budget. 650 is too much right now, 400 seems like a better option with only losing the front camera 5mp and the 3D touch. I think the 3D touch would confuse me sometimes. Are these features that remarkable to encourage the 6s?

I've only used 5.4Gb and still have 21.5 left. I heard the 6s uses more space for the OS. If so how much will I lose if I go with the 16Gb 5 SE ?

I haven't been a fan of 3D Touch so far, but hopefully it will be improved significantly in iOS 10.

I actually prefer the iPhone 5/5S/SE's size for one-handed use, but the combination of my old eyes with mobile websites targeted for larger screens has forced my hand. I will upgrade to a larger iPhone 7 this fall. Otherwise I would have just gotten the SE months ago.

Personally I wouldn't get any iPhone with just 16 GB in 2016, unless it was just for temporary use, or if you KNOW you won't want to take a bazillion pictures or whatever. I find 16 GB too little, and 32 GB limiting. 64 GB is where it's at, but I can function reasonably well with 32 GB. But then again, you're only using 5.4 GB.

I want to wait for the iPhone 7 but like you my hand has been forced. The functionality of it has been diminished severely. I don't think I'll be missing anything with the 3D touch, the front facing camera I might. I'm 100% not a selfie taker. Don't care. Not Vain. Although my looks alone could win an Oscar, lol jk

Does the increased rear camera MP increase the file size of the pictures, thus taking up more storage?

Yes. Plus Live Photos take up even more space. But for people like us, they're great (since we have two young kids).

And then there's the matter of 4K video.

Thanks for the reply. That actually helps and has made me rethink the 16gb. On the other hand it pushes me within 150$ of the 6s, but then again if I went with the 6s I would be back to 16gb at the starting price. The headaches

You are very very late in the cycle, at this point (if you can afford the 7) you should wait. Find a used 5C that can hold you over until the 7 comes out. A used 5C is dirt cheap already and will lose very little value once the 7 comes out.

Do carries offer full price or close to it for a phone less than a year old? I can always trade up from the SE though, right?

I just grabbed a used 16GB SE on swappa for $310, I figure $1/month for 1 GB on iCloud, and Google Photos will take care of my storage needs. Currently have a 6s+ with 128GB, tired of carrying around a giant phone, always liked the 5's size.

I really prefer using a tablet for browsing & movies over a large phone.

You can, but you'll certainly lose more money than just riding it out with a used 5c or 5s. It really depends on how much you want to spend... in theory you can go for the monthly iPhone upgrade plan that Apple offers and get a new phone every year, but financially it's the least sound decision.

Even what Artdeco did is pretty smart, because I don't see Apple refreshing the SE this year again, so if you do chose to sell (not trade in) a used SE when the 7 comes out, you will pretty much get back almost everything you paid for it.

I picked up an SE 16g. I thought I had my contacts being synced with iCloud. When comparing both lists of contacts it's clear that they don't match. In iCloud I only have Contacts enabled. Is there anything else I should have running???

Ah, it appears I had my contacts sorted differently. They compare exactly the same, thanks all for your time and help. I'm sure I'll be happy with this phone beyond the 7 & 7s release.

Now with my old iPhone 5 it seems the screen goes randomly crazy. Is there a known average cost to have it repaired? I might try n get it fixed for a backup phone. It still rocks all the apps that I used.

Apple measures in GiB anyway, so it doesn't apply here AFAIK.

I forgot about that, I don't pay attention to it much. Part of why I got a 128GB iPhone was so I could ignore space concerns.

I think ending up with over 128Gb of photos is just a bad idea. If they are not properly organized as you go along you will pay for it in the end to organize all the photos in the end.. to me, even though I only used 2Gb on my last phone for photos, the small amount of space forces frequent organizing and sorting of photos.

Live Photos adds 50% to the photo size, and larger resolutions (eg. 12 GB+) also adds to the photo size. Plus, I like taking sequential shots and to capture that one perfect moment. They get bundled up as a single photo, but retain all the other adjacent photos.

Furthermore, we are in the era of 4K video. Single videos alone are often hundreds of MB.

And with the Photos app, it's actually fairly easy to scroll through them.

I prefer to weed out the things I don't like then end up like some of my family members that have to go through literally 30k photos, no thanks
