Come on, I use 4S's with iOS 7 every day. How is it a cruel joke.... iOS 7 on the 4 is a cruel joke! The 4S runs fine, taking into account that it only has 512MB of ram....!

I used it every day from the day it hit my phone until Jan. 20 when I had to give up my iPhone. It may have gotten more smooth in the months since then but as of Jan. it was harsh.

The iPhone 4S with iOS 7 is not bad. My iPad 2, which has the same CPU, is pretty decent with iOS 7. The A5 SoC is the same between the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, but the iPhone 4S is running at I believe 800 MHz, vs. the 1 GHz of the iPad 2.

That said, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an iOS device unless it had at least 1 GB RAM and an A6 or better.

I am interested in what it's going to look like, even if it is not going to surprise anyone. Apple's design usually sells with its polish so I have no doubt the physical device will look nice.

One thing that Apple can do for the consumers and the industry as a whole is giving the base model 32 GB - considering iPhone's influence that move will surely change the bottom line of consumers' expectation of other phones, and Apple can somewhat mitigate the lack of expandable storage option in its offerings.

Fat bezel all around will be a turnoff for me, but I am digging the rounded sides which will be nicer to hold. I absolutely hate the sharp beveled edges of 5 and 5S. Nice visual like my Omega Planet Ocean but not ergonomic friendly.

Too bad. A8 would do great with 2GB RAM, but I'm glad I didn't wait months for the new iPad mini Retina - pulled the trigger on a discounted 1st gen mini Retina back in July. 😛
As a side note, both iPhone / iPad mini Retina come with PoP RAM, while iPad Air comes with off package RAM. According to this rumour, at least the Air 2 will finally have 2GB RAM.
I hope all A9 devices come with 2GB+ RAM next year.

2 GB would be nice, but iOS tends not to need as much RAM simply because of the way it approaches multitasking. Apps running in the background don't get to eat up much memory and are actively purged from memory as an active app needs more.

The biggest improvements that would come out of having an additional 1 GB of RAM would be having more browser tabs open at any time and having a larger number of apps that you can switch between without any of them needing to be started from scratch.

Most apps (outside of games) are still simple enough that the difference between being able to resume from RAM and being forced to load fresh aren't terribly significant. The number of available tabs in the web browser is of more importance, at least to me, and as websites grow more complex, the amount of RAM needed will also increase along with it.

I'm also curious if there will be any differences between the 4.7" model and the rumored 5.5" model in terms of RAM. Presumably the 5.5" model will have more room to accommodate more RAM and a larger battery to drive it and Apple may want additional room to differentiate the product as a premium model.

Had it on my Galaxy Nexus. Used it once with Google Wallet. It took longer than swiping my credit card. Never used it again.

Google Wallet takes way less time than swiping my card. Especially on those machines that aren't cleaned and it takes a hundred swipes. I can pay with google wallet before I would have even taken out my card normally.

One of the things I hate the most about my Nexus 7 is the lack of a physical button and I also hated its lack on my Motorola phone. Plus you're often losing screen space to a virtual bezel.

The combination of a physical button and TouchID is heaven in comparison.



You are correct. However the effect is the same. I can tap my credit cards to make purchases. No swiping or PINs needed for small purchases. A phone offers me zero advantage here. Plus you don't have to configure a credit card or or worry about battery drain. Just pull out the appropriate card, of which you may have multiple, and you're done.

People have RFID scanners that capture your CC info directly off the card in your wallet. You can't do that with a phone right now.

Battery drain with NFC? There's almost zero. If a device can't make it through an entire day with NFC and Wifi on it's not worth owning.

Also you mentioned a $200 limit in canada for RFID purchases. Google Wallet limits you to $1000 per day on a single device and up to $10,000 per day across multiple devices and cards linked to your account. Once you verify your identity the only limit is your bank account balance.

Actually, it's a significant issue, but not in the way you were thinking. If you're travelling and need to use your phone a lot (surfing, calling, watching video, playing Angry Birds), then the battery can go to zero.

If it goes to zero, you can't use your NFC-enabled phone. I came across this issue with airline boarding passes, for example. Fortunately, I'm always anal about these things and whenever possible, I carry hardcopies of my tickets and boarding passes in my briefcase.

I was the under the impression it was $100, but more importantly, the stores limit this. Most stores are $50 or below.

However, that's per transaction. Not per day.
