How do you figure? AT&T didn't replace my unlocked phone with a locked phone.

AT&T locks and unlocks phones. Apple does not. An AT&T phone is not the same part and does not ship in the same box as an unlocked or T-Mobile phone.

Bull. They throttle you and allow something like two unlock requests per line per six months. I buy phones out-right and unlock often. Last I checked I only had one request available.

Oh, that's completely different from the imaginary problem you mentioned of OTHER people not getting their unlocks. Still an AT&T problem that needs to be resolved with their customer support.

It's a foreseeable scenario for which Apple did not anticipate nor provide a mechanism for correcting. When the iPhone was still AT&T exclusive and you bought it unlocked in the U.S., Apple unlocked them through iTunes. When you put in a request with AT&T, it still *gasp* unlocks through iTunes[/]. Shocking! Apple controls the mechanism even AT&T uses. Is it really unreasonable to expect them to have a way to preserve your unlock?

Nope. Many people buy unlocked phones with warranty to replace damaged phones while still on contract with a non-AT&T provider., just like the unlocked T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 N900T I purchased new at launch (even preordered it). If it broke and Samsung replaced it with a locked T-Mobile phone then they would have required one month and a day of service to submit an unlock request that takes up to seven additional days to be approved. Not sure why you didn't just drop it, but you are welcome to go on proving me right if you want.

Other people were still screaming at ModMyI and other iDevice news outlets for reporting on "rumors" of the iPad mini, as if you had to wait for Apple to announce it. If you did that it'd be too late. Apple carefully controls such announcement to avoid cannibalizing other products.

They knew good and well that they wouldn't be selling many of the newly released iPod touch 5G at launch ($300 for 16GB, $200 model didn't exist yet) to existing iPod owners as upgrades with an iPad mini releasing a couple weeks later with better specs and only $30 more. Ichinisan sold his iPod touch 4G for top dollar in anticipation of the 5G announcement and preordered the 5G when it was announced, so he scored big by acting on TWO rumors in a row. Canceling the preorder for the iPad mini based on rumor was just as smart.

Went through Apple Store using Apple warranty while carrier unlocked and got a carrier locked replacement, so that probably only works for SIM-free unlocked as opposed to "carrier unlocked". SIM-free unlocked out of the box was not available at launch.

You're hilarious. I never complained about the quality of AT&T's service or support because I didn't deal with AT&T. Apple makes locked phone and Apple makes unlocked phones. Even though Apple has the ability to unlock without involving AT&T (that's how it was done before AT&T allowed the user to request an unlock), that's not the point: Apple should not have replaced an unlocked phone with a locked phone. I never said "they should have unlocked this locked phone for me." I said they should not have replaced an unlocked phone with a locked phone. Got it? They are not different models. They should have grabbed from one stack instead of another. As for Apple's involvement with the carrier, they are obviously able to update the IMEI/ESN on the carrier's billing system so that the replacement phone stays under contract for those who still have contracts and can still be blocked/banned for non-payment and such. Apple has just as much access for unlocking phones.

There is a SOLID like of logic in my responses from start to finish. You were incorrect in saying that rumors should never influence buying decisions and I used a personal experience that says otherwise. No goal-post shifting here, you just seem unable to follow. I remember laughing at all the self-righteous users commenting on every iPad mini story with crap like "Stop reporting on rumors and speculation! Apple hasn't announced anything yet!" Was that you? 🙄 I was glad they were reporting the rumors and we acted accordingly with BUYING DECISIONS BASED ON "RUMOR."

Apple has pretty solid reliability ratings. I'll take that over anecdotal evidence.
