iPhone 6 craze???

We were actually discussing something similar in ATOT the other day.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2400888&highlight=china

71% of Chinese said they measured success by what they owned, versus about 20% of North Americans.

Having a genuine iPhone is a huge status symbol over there. Especially since they are so difficult to come by on the mainland. Those two factors combined mean people will pay top dollar for one on the black market. The Daily Mail was saying people will pay upwards of $3300 for the gold ones. Gold, like everywhere else, symbolized wealth in China.

Apple really is a huge cultural phenomenon outside of the US. Even in Cuba, I saw plenty cars with the Apple logo on the back window. Young guys put them on their riced out Ladas.

I'm surprised the Gold iPhone would still be popular. I didn't think the gold on the iPhone 6 looked that good.

Only 20% of North Americans measure success by what they own? I think there are a lot of liars in that other 80%, haha. 😛

Apparently Gold is a lot more popular in Asian countries. Apparently it's just one of those cultural things.

Surprisingly, it looks like the gold is selling at the same rate as silver. Space gray is ahead, but not by as much as you would think.

How much of that is because scalpers are picking up gold phones and taking them to sell overseas for crazy prices? Or picking up whatever is available for that matter?

I agree. I think it's more subconscious though. We don't admit it or want to admit it or we do it without realizing. Easy to do when we've owned nice things.

I think a big part of the craze is they released two phones at the exact same time, so now people have their choice of a massive phablet or the standard trim iPhone.

We've had it good a lot longer than they have, and we live in world where everyone in the ghetto is porting iPhones. I also think we measure success more by accomplishment, respect, and power rather than just material gain.

Though the sheer amount of people here going deep into debt to buy half million dollar homes with a BMW in the driveway shows that we do like our swag a little too much as well.

$500,000 homes around here isn't that expensive. Actually it's in the low mid range.
