I wish they'd go ahead and release the new phone already. I'm ready to toss this VZW Nexus into a lake. I'll give up the larger screen for more stability. Plus the gf likes iOS so it allows me to upgrade yearly without much pain.

Nope, here's the reason. A person buying a G4 or Note II wouldn't even be looking at any of the other models, they want a flagship phone. So flagship to flagship phone Apple spanks Samsung. And people who buy the pre paid cheap phones wouldn't be buying a flagship one. If Samsung offered only had 2 phones - the G4 & the Note II, they still wouldn't outsell Apple, plain and simple.
And that has more to do with product loyalty than it does with who makes the better product. Samsung along with the rest of the Android market has alot more variety. If you can't afford to pay the premium for a flagship phone than you still have plenty to choose from. With Apple, you only option is to buy the predecessor (iPhone 4S at this point) which is way outdated compared to alot of similarly priced Android based phones.
The reasons iPhones look better in terms of individual sales is because Apple doesn't offer as broad of a product line. Apple's numbers wouldn't look nearly as good if they decided to iPhone Cs, Ds, and Es to appeal to both low end and high end markets.

I have a hunch that if Apple released a lower priced iPhone, their flagship phone might well be outsold by the S4 as there would be a lot of people who wouldn't have to pony up $650 to stay in the iOS ecosystem. Apple might sell more phones overall, but without a doubt some of the "5S" sales would be cannibalized.
That is most likely true, but I'm curious to know what their cheap iPhone will be. My best guess is that it will be similarly priced, probably only $50 to $100 cheaper than their flagship but they will probably skimp out on more than $150 worth of materials and components to preserve their profit margins. The main argument here will be "For an extra $50/$100 it's worth just getting the better phone bro".

Why does everyone assume that most people pay full-price for their phones?

The iPhone 4 is free with contract. The 4S is only $99.

Nobody is assuming that people are buying their phones outright. Almost none of us do. But when discussing price comparisons, prediction etc. We need to discuss them in terms of absolute cost because it would be the only consistent price for comparison and accuracy. When you buy a phone with a contract, the price can vary day to day and carrier to carrier. Plus they like to bundle stuff like rebates, gift cards etc.

Yes. There are so many Android phones ranging different prices, one will invariably find one that suits her/him. It would be strange if Apple did more business than everyone else combined. That would indicate a monopoly, and Apple would be under heavier scrutinies by authorities.

Seriously, though, what does everyone think the best alphabet that fits the spirit of alleged.. iPhone 5C is? I can't decide. 5K? 5T? 5X? 5Z? Nothing seems right.
