iPhone 5 regains US marketshare

Yeah, but quite honestly the 3GS is a fine smartphone for some and I bet many who could have gotten a 4S waited until the five.

My wife sat on her upgrade for a year because she wanted an iPhone with a larger screen before the 4S even hit.

Yeah when I gave up my 3GS to my sister, I still thought it was still super fast. I honestly could've sat on my upgrade until the 5 but I really wanted Facetime and I didn't regret it. I can't even begin to start explaining how happy I was with the upgrade. 🙂 (Siri is fun too)

Except the boost was artificially higher this year because of how pathetic an upgrade the 4S turned out to be.

The overall long term trend in every country (even in the US) is still towards Android. People are becoming disenchanted with iOS and grids filled with icons, regardless of how many chamfered cuts Apple puts on their phones.

Dude you're trying too hard. So what if the 4S was a pathetic upgrade? Want to spend time commenting on the Nexus S being a huge upgrade?

You know, iOS isn't just about grids and icons. That's one element. Only a true fanboy would make it a point to say that people are leaving in droves because of that. Let's spin it the other way. People are disenchanted with the Android lagfest. Even 4.2 didn't solve anything. It's not fully 60 fps smooth, and even the iPhone 4S still feels smoother than the Galaxy Nexus.

There are certain things that keep people on iOS and certain things that keep people on Android. Honestly, the grid of icons isn't my biggest concern. I like Android's customization, but I enjoy my apps and phone more on my iPhone and spend less time worrying about when the next nightly will come out to fix the HWComposer on my SGS2. Customization is a never ending thing. The more you keep allowing people to do it, the more they will look for ways to change things up. That's great and all, but if you're into it, it never ends. You'll spend 10 hours having the perfect layout this week only to change it up next week with a new homescreen and lockscreen. Sorry, but that's just like buying every phone that comes out and every incremental upgrade. It's not worth most people's time/effort.

Why do you make it such an issue? Does this increased marketshare hurt you so bad you need to make a jab at Apple every second you get?

That's not terribly surprising considering the 4S has a lower resolution screen and a much more powerful gpu, if it wasn't smoother than the Nexus something would be seriously wrong.

Besides it's not like the Galaxy Nexus is a modern Android phone anyways, the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Note 2 are much faster and smoother.

The iPhone 5 is really a sexy phone.
I would have jumped on one had it retain the 3:2 ratio instead of the long odd shape.

Let me see if I got this right ...

You say the iPhone 5 is really sexy and in the next sentence you say it has a long odd shape ... is that about right?

He actually said "odd shape" on a whole new line.
This changes everything.
What does it mean?
How can a phone be sexy, but not perfect?

Android is going to be even tougher competition if Google can get its act together and make high end phones available for less.

First they have to resolve their issues actually selling them. Nexus 4 on the Play Store has been an absolutely fluster cluck.

Is it really that hard for you to comprehend ??
Its like saying thats a beautiful girl but she has small tits.
Or thats a beautiful car but I don't like the front-end.
Something can be sexy and can still have some imperfection.
If you don't understand that logic, I don't know how to explain it to you.

OK, well I'll agree that it has a long odd shape but disagree about THAT being sexy. In fact, I'd call the iP5 fugly, really fugly.

There are other names for it, of course, like:

The flexy fiver!

and

the iBend

Lol, that's your opinion like I think that the SGS3 looks butt ugly. Egg shaped Humpty Dumpty looking phone lol.

HTC One X has the best design this year IMO.

I'm pretty sure most people feel the iPhone 5 looks better than the SGS3 in design. You can see review after review and look at all the reactions when the SGS3 came out. It was underwhelming. The design certainly was a negative. Is it enough to stop people from buying a phone? Maybe not.

Brian, your attempts to paint the iPhone 5 as ugly are just ridiculous. You're trying too hard. Yes it's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but you're taking something that most people agree is good looking and calling it ugly. Like Emma Stone for example.

As much as I hate apple/apple-people, the iphone 5 is not ugly. Its not gorgeous but not ugly. imo its rather bland but in a minimalist ways (read:apple way). Mine bends a bit but it bends back easily enough. I just alternate it in my pocket every other day. 🙂

I just switched to the 5 from Galaxy Nexus. Honestly, I don't notice the smaller screen that much because of how superior the 5's screen is compared to the Galaxy Nexus. It's not even a comparison. It's far better. Colors are much more vibrant. And max brightness is incredibly easy to see in sunlight unlike the Galaxy Nexus which was hard to see during day time.

The smoothness is much better than the Nexus. Overall, like the professional reviewers have said, the iOS just feels much more polished than Android.

I do miss the customization though. I miss the back button. I miss flash - Google took that away too. I don't miss the Android email app. It was terrible. I hated the contacts list. Call buttons are easier on iOS. Universal search makes searching much easier. Really hate how I can't just drag and drop files into the iPhone.

This still totally weirds me out.

It can't be good to have a bendy bit (the metal) bonded with a non bendy bit (the screen) never mind all the non bendable gubbins inside. Sooner or later they are going to part company I'd have thought.

Does anyone else here have a flexible iphone?

No love for Verizon's tramp stamp on the Home button of the Note 2? 😛

Heh, I went and checked out the Note 2 while I was returning my temporary phone. Very nice phone, though the model in store that I was using would not recognize the stylus writing on the screen, only when you would hold it near the screen but not touching. If I were staying with Verizon I would get the Note 2 without a doubt. It did not even feel all that much larger than the S3 when held in hand.

The tramp stamp definitely is a turn off though. 😉
