Yea, and the GPS is a pretty sure-fire way to make sure that you are loading up everything in there. Are you in your car? Maybe move the phone so it's near a vent if you can.
Had it happen to me once. Was streaming music and running the GPS on a road trip. I turned it off for about a half hour and it cooled down. Needless to say I had to replace the phone for a different reason but am making the same trip next week so we will see what this iPhone does.
Just turn it off and let it cool down for a bit before using it again and you should be fine. These phones are designed to turn off before any internal damage or burning occurs.
Try a vent-mounted phone holder for car use - I use GPS & stream music or mlb.com all of the time, while driving, have never gotten the overheat message.
I've had them get warm or hot if I'm in an area where phone reception is marginal and the phone expends a lot of energy trying to locate and connect to cells.
I've also been to a daytime concert and had the thing in the sun for a while, and got the too hot alert so had to let it cool down.
