Taiwan-based companies included in the supply chain for iPhone 5 and iPad 3 have begun to prepare materials for the production of the two devices, which are likely to make their debuts in September and to hit the market in October, according to industry sources.

Upstream component makers including Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), which is in charge of assembling the devices; Simplo Technologies and Dynapack International Technology, in charge of manufacturing batteries; TPK Holding and Wintek, in charge of touch panel modules; Catcher, in charge of chassis; and Largan Precision, in charge of webcams, are all expected to benefit from the orders.

Currently, Simply is supplying 65% of Apple's total battery demand with Dynapack owning the other 35%.

The sources pointed out that Apple only plans to launch one model of the new iPhone, while iPad 3 has just recently been added to the production schedule with both set to be produced in small volumes in August and the volume will start picking up in September and October.

The sources pointed out that the iPhone 5's supply volume is estimated to be around 6-7 million units in the third quarter and with the addition of iPhone 4 shipments, total iPhone shipments in the quarter will reach 24-25 million units with volumes to maintain at the same level in the fourth quarter. In 2011, Apple is forecasted to ship over 85 million iPhones.

Since Apple is also set to start supplying iPad 3 in August, the shipments of iPad series products including iPad 2 are expected to surpass 15 million units, and iPad's supply volume for 2011 will have a good chance to break 40 million units.

Although most market watchers estimate that Apple's iPhone supply volume will only reach 20 million units in the third quarter and iPad's supply volume only at 11-12 million units due to the slower-than-expected progress at Foxconn's assembly line in Chengdu, China, players within Apple's upstream supply chain have all recently increased their estimated supply volumes for the second half, indicating that Apple is set to attack with another wave of new devices, before its competitors become strong, the sources noted. Apple is considering designing an even thinner and lighter tablet PC with its panel resolution increasing to 250dpi, the sources added.

It won't be an "iPad 3". Apple will start to develope a line of iPads in the same way they have a line MacBook Pros. There will be different models with different capabilities at different price points.

I am not sure if this will be good or bad but rest assured it is what is going to happen.

Probably making a 7" inch variant/premium variant/budget variant of the iPad 2.

iPhone 5/4S/4G is probably just an updated version of the iPhone 4. If they keep with their cycle it will have the same or similar body to the iPhone 4.

latest rumor is upscale model of iPad2 with high-res (ie retina) screen.

1080p ATV would be nice (XBMC/Plex om nom nom)

1080p iPhone would be REALLY nice. Especially with this beast:

I really hope the new iPhone has 4G. Otherwise, why would Apple wait so long to release it? I don't want to get an iPhone on Verizon where I can't use the Internet while doing a voicecall - I love that feature! haha.

Also really excited about the new Macbook Air. i7, Thunderbolt, and Lion...mmm. I think they should offer 4G in the new Air, and should also do a Family Plan Internet bundle - I don't want to play for 4G on my iPhone, my iPad, and my Macbook Air all separately. And it seems kind of silly to even pay for an iPhone with a tethering plan in addition to an iPad's data plan.

I'm also very interested to see what Apple does with Airplay. I am planning on wiring up for whole-house audio next year (Dayton has a nice, basic set of ceiling speakers for $50 a pair) and currently Sonos is winning in my book for the amp/distribution system combo. Sonos *does* allow you to patch in an Airplay and do groups and whatnot, but it's not as good as an integrated system. So Apple needs to either come out with their own multi-source, multi-room system (they already have the multi-room part down), or they need to allow their stuff to be better-integrated with third-party systems. Also, Sonos has MOG, which I've really been hooked on lately 😉

I think a mid-cycle iPad upgrade would be weird, but welcome. Mostly I just hope they upgrade the cameras on it. The 720p rear camera is grainy and the front camera is a piece of crap. I'd like to snag a few for my family because my first child is on the way this month and iPads would be a lot easier for mobile webcam sessions with grandparents etc., but the quality of the iPad 2's front-facing webcam is just utter junk. I'll stick with my cheapo Dynex webcams on my Hackintoshes for now :awe:

What makes this release even more interesting is this article on a heated wireless stylus for iOS devices from Apple:

imo a Retina screen with a Wacom-quality pressure-sensitive pen would be...well, ridiculous. In a great way. I can't get away from paper now because pen input on iOS devices blows. I love taking notes, doodling, and doing artwork, but none of the styluses I've tried for iPhone/iPad work very well at all. The most fun one I have right now is the Nomad:

While it's really cool to use over my Pogo pen, it's still lightyears behind my Wacom Intuos 4. If Apple could release a viable pressure-sensitive stylus on top of a Retina screen, where you can't see the pixels, then I'd consider THAT the beginning of the end for paper. I'm already mostly paperless at home, aside from my paper notebooks that I use for notes. I have a paper shredder and a double-sided scanner that all of my mail, notes, etc. go into to be scanned & destroyed. The resulting (searchable) PDF goes into my Dropbox, which is accessible from all of my computers & iOS devices. Adding a stylus would be just that much more awesome for a paperless world. And for doing artwork :awe:

I'm thankful my contract ends in October. iPhone 5 will be a huge step up from my aging 3G, even if it ends up being just a speed bump.

I'm in the same boat. My contract is up in December and I have an old-ass 3G that I can't wait to dump.

The new iPhone will be sort of like a "4GS" more than a "5", no?

Retina, Retina, Retina once they do that to the IPAD then I'll jump. I have the Ipod touch with Retina and nothing look as good nothing.
