I got my job provided ip5 yesterday and have been messing around with it. I recall the ip5 launch where they made a big stink about 28 mp panorama pics yet when I use it the pic looks just as crappy as my sgs3 and sgs2 and the file size is 3-4 meg. Am I missing something here? And I understanding MP does not necessarily mean quality but I was under the assumption that apple and the iphone5 took each frame at a full 8 mp each but the quality does not even come close in the photos. I thought it would stitch 5 high quality photos together.

They way it works is that it constantly takes a snapshot of the center of the frame as you move around. I would imagine 28MP is the max resolution the picture could be, if you were able to hold it perfectly steady as you rotated it. If there any variance in height, it has to cut off the top and bottom to make on continuous picture.

The couple of panoramas I've done have turned out pretty well.

huge diff between 28mp and a 3-4mb file. the height variance will be there in either case (full res or lower res) but if op is ending up with a 3-4mb file there's no way it's using the full sensor res. what res do your panoramas turn out?

Two questions. Did you turn on panorama mode? When taking a picture click option and then click panorama.

Second is are you sweeping the phone? These questions may sound idiotic but panoramic works and it sounds like you are doing something fundamentally wrong.

Yeah something is wrong. I took a 4 shot panorama with my sg3 and it is larger than 4mb. Maybe your quality is set lower? I know on the sg3 you can pick between .3mp and 8mp. Maybe yours got changed.

As far as I know you cannot reduce the resolution of the camera.

One slightly less idiotic question. Panoramic requires the phone to be held upright and then swept (you may have noticed from all the text on the screen oriented that way)

i just looked at one of panoramas and it's 7731x1865 which is about 14.5MP. File size is only like 2.5MB.

8MP resolution is 3264x2448. As you can tell from the res my panorama is in, I'm missing quite a bit on the upper and lower.

I guess theoretically, you'd need about 10,000x2700 or so resolution for a 28MP panorama. I just don't think it will be possible unless you use a tripod and move the camera at an exact speed the phone's software wants.

Methinks the 28MP hir-es ios panorama is BS. No matter how slow I take the pics they look non hi-res and are 2-3mb each. Plus they look like ass.

I'm thinking that there's some mega compression going on. The bigger your pano the worse it'll look.

This is my assumption, haven't tested it.

^seems likely - there may be a target size for any panorama. try taking one of a plain white wall and see what happens?

Maybe, I would test it right now, but I'm sure my work place wouldn't like me taking pictures of a ton of confidential material. :D

Buy a effing camera if you don't like it. And why bitch about what you got for free?

What a useless post. Assuming he's doing everything correctly, there's no reason he shouldn't be allowed to criticize a poorly implemented feature, or the poor output at least. For free? If they're advertising the feature, he's paying for the feature.

OP, throw up a photo so we can have a look.

oK, I just took a pic of an area with more detail. The res was a little lower but the file size was 6MB. So I assume in order to get a really higher res with much better quality I would have to turn in a circle for a few minutes in order for the phone and SW to fully absorb in the detail?

I just looked at a panorama shot I have (on an iPhone 4S) and its 5 MB. Its a little darker of a picture tho.

23.4MP and 25.6MP respectively.

But notice their height. The people that took these photos managed to not lose a lot of resolution on the top and bottom, whereas my picture lost some 600 vertical pixels. Over the course of a wide photo, it can add up. I might go in the backyard tonight and try to do it more steady.

try turning slower perhaps?

Ok, I just did one in my backyard. Was very deliberate about it.

wwyWK.jpg

10784x2394, 25.8MP, 16.5MB

Edit: Actually did one before this one that came out at about 27MP, but my GPS was still on and I know enough not to give you guys that photo with the EXIF GPS data, haha. Maybe I can strip that out in a little while.

28MP should be possible, but it's probably going to require a tripod and a steady hand.
