Did the 4.1 update fix your issues? I'm still having problems and it's driving me nuts. Thinking about taking it to an Apple Store to get a replacement, but the closest one is an hour away.

My device doesn't seem to have the issues anymore. If you're still having problems, take it in and get it replaced. I heard some phones out there still have the sensor problems even with the new update.

I used to have this as an issue A LOT and I do not seem to be having it at all since upgrading to 4.1.

I just wanted to repost and say that I just experienced the proximity sensor problem. This is annoying as hell, why can't apple fix this?

It seems like the sensor is way to sensitive. When I move my head slightly my phone turns on.

If the proximity sensor issue is due to a faulty sensor, no software update in the world is going to fix it. Same with the antenna problems. The hardware is either broken or a flawed design.

All software updates can do are to 'reflow' your habits to make it less of an issue, or try to cover up the issue entire, as they did with the signal bars for the antenna issue.

It's not a hardware problem...

So their software developers are having trouble isolating the glitch then? If they claimed to have resolved it with 4.1 and people are still having problems, that implies its a hardware problem.

Apparently it IS a hard ware issue. I called apple support about my brand new iPhone4 and they schedule a swap out at the local store. They said it is affecting a portion of the iPhones and since it has 4.1 on it (came that way out of the box) then it is defective.

I guess I'm going to need to drive to the apple store then.

Do I have to drive to an Apple Store or can I have them mail me a new phone or pick one up at AT&T?

I am inclined to believe it is a hardware fault. I bought 3 iPhone 4's and none of them exhibit this problem with 4.0 or 4.1. I've heard from a buddy of mine that theirs still have the problem even after 4.1.

When I called, I talked to the first rep, and was almost immediately transferred to a supervisor when I explained the issue, the troubleshooting I had done, and that I received the phone with iOS 4.1 already installed and that was experiencing proximity sensor issues. The supervisor immediately explained that I would need a replacement phone.

She gave me three options, none of which involved an ATT store. I'm not saying it can't be done, I just wasn't given the option.

1) Swap it out at an Apple store.
2) Cross ship, but only if I had an AppleCare plan on the phone (BS if you ask me), this also requires a $500 hold on a CC. I don't have an AppleCare plan on the phone yet anyhow.
3) I ship my phone and they ship a replacement. I was told this would take 5 days or so and I would be out a phone (unacceptable IMO).

I have Friday afternoon off, so I'm driving to an Apple store. The supervisor set up a case number, so barring one of the Apple tech on site wishing to give me a hard time, I should be in and out with a new phone.
