but...but....iOS doesn't have to be modded to be great.

Without going down that road too fast, there aren't TOO many things that I need to jailbreak for. Each iOS version seems to include one of the things I used to need to jailbreak to get.

Site is getting hammered. Was hoping to try this since I misstakenly upgraded my iPad to 3.2.1 and lost my jailbreak. :(

I'm just talking smack. What exactly does jailbreaking get you?

"Better" multitasking for starters.

Access to any app that Apple wouldn't approve, which includes different things for different people. For me, I really like customizing my UI and look, so I install themes and new icons a lot. SBSettings makes changing settings a LOT easier and faster, as Apple keeps them buried in settings menus. All sorts of stuff.

So is there a 3rd world market for Apple apps like SlideMe is for Android?

The more I think about it, the more I want a dedicated music machine. I'm torn between the Zune HD and an iPod Touch.

Yeah, there's a decent store. Beyond SBSettings and the Google Voice app and better multitasking, there's also the very useful "MyWi" which turns a jailbroken iPhone to a WiFi basestation using the 3G network. I used it a fair bit when I was travelling for my wife and I to check email on our laptop - the Irish O2 network even allowed it in their ToS (50MB for 1euro... not too bad).

There's two unofficial app stores - Cydia and Rock. Pliable posted a link to Cydia. The other is Rock.

One other thing that jailbreaking helps out with is the ability to use mp3 ringtones that you might already have without having to convert them into other formats to get on the phone.

This was brought up in the other thread: MMS and facetime are gone after you jailbreak. It's being worked on, but if these are important to you I'd wait till the fix it.

There's an unofficial fix if you're missing facetime and MMS that worked for me:

-add http://iphonedelivery.advinux.fr/cydia as a source
-download the only app from that source
-respring/reboot
-facetime and MMS should now be back

I've also read that if you restore to a pre-jailbreak backup, it will also give back MMS and facetime without undoing the jailbreak as it's not a full firmware restore.

Isn't this a bit of a security flaw, that a device can be hacked just via a web link? I don't know anything about the mechanism or if you need to authorise content to run on the device to allow this to work, before anyone jumps down my throat for asking this. Just seems like you could use this method to potentially extract data, too.

Any root/jailbreak is a security flaw, but this one seems like it could be a little worse. I would have to see a video of exactly how it worked though to pass judgement.

Also I thought iOS4 was jailbroken awhile ago?

Basically customization & non-Apple-sanctioned apps. And access to every single app from the Apple App Store for free, if you're into stealing.

There's a lot of super useful apps that you can only use when the phone is jailbroken, like MyWi (creates a 3G hotspot for your other devices), Intelliscreen (lets you preview Calendar, Email, SMS, etc. on your homescreen), AndroidLock (Android-style pattern-unlock for your phone, useful if you have kids who have figured out the slide-to-unlock feature), 3G Unrestrictor (use any app that is limited on Wifi over 3G), Backgrounder (true multi-tasking), etc. Plus themes, wallpapers, all kinds of neat little things.

ive got both the itouch and zuneHD in my house. i am starting to prefer the zuneHD now, the controls are very easy, sound quality is good and the wifi sync rocks. the coolest thing i like about the pc software is the library automatically updates when you change files around, add or delete files from it. i used to dread adding new music to itunes, id have to remember what i added and go into itunes and add them over again. i also really like the dock for it, its nice to be able to plug the usb into my tv, have the HDMI connection (720p) to watch movies and still be able to listen to my whole library on my stereo.
