iPhone 4, scratched glass eventually breaking

From what I've read, it seems the glass is cracking due to scratches. Personally, I find it hard to believe. My personal take is that even though there are scratches, you'd have to press pretty hard (sitting down on it?) to cause a breakage. Glass just doesn't break on its own. Extreme temperature changes could cause a crack I suppose.

And there are a ton of 3rd party, non-Apple licensed cases which are much much cheaper.

hopefully for the iPhone guys, this leads to some FTC investigations of how Apple licenses stuff.

Call it price fixing or price gouging...it sucks for you guys.

Doesn't matter, people will still buy the iPhone 4 in droves. And when the iPhone 5 is released, it could come with a pre-cracked screen, no antenna, and a leaking battery, and people would still buy it en mass because it has an Apple logo.
 
I just looked at my iPhone and it broke in 2 pieces.


Then I tried to pick up those pieces, and it evaporated into dangerous fumes.
 
That's a pretty interesting article. To be honest I had never really thought about the potential negatives of having so much glass on a phone, mainly because I'm not an ATT customer and therefore have no way to purchase the phone, but knowing my own habits I have a feeling I would destroy that thing in a matter of days.

Actually, there's nothing the FTC can do. These are officially licensed products and in this situation, no one is forced to take out a license. No one is forced to create products revolving around/involving the iPhone.

But there has to be competition...right?

I'm not saying that I know the laws about this stuff but it seems like it goes against everything that the free market is based on. Not that it matters to me since I don't own an Apple product and don't see myself every owning one...I just think its really crappy for the guys that do own them.

Unless its an elitist kind of thing? I know some people prefer to pay higher prices for some things with the thinking that it makes them better than people that can't afford them. I'm not saying that's what this is...just trying to figure it out in my puny little brain.
 
According to the Engadget poll

it says:

No - 29.8%

Yes, bumper - 4.7%
Yes, 3rd party case - 1.8%
Yes, Slide on case - 2.2%
Yes, no case - 3.2%
Don't have one - 50.7%

I'm pretty sure this poll isn't accurate, but according to the poll, 11.9% has a shattered screen. Removing those who don't own an iPhone, it comes out to 24.29% of users having a shattered screen. This means that for every 4 iPhones sold, 1 is shattered. Its either that or people aren't being truthful in voting in the poll.

Neither the poll on Engadget or the one linked by the OP gives enough information about the severity of the problem. Another thing to note is that the Engadget poll only asks about shattered phones, not shattered phones due to "dust scratching".

The poll in the OP's link also lumps shattered and scratched into one group, which is which?

ok so he founded them both, I still don't think there is some hidden agenda going on concerning the iPhone. Considering Gizmodo is now owned by Gawker and Engadget by AOL and gdgt by Rojas I really don't see them conspiring on this.

and you're still wrong about Engadget getting in trouble with the iPhone4 early unit as that was Gizmodo.
