Iphone 4 cannot be heard

It just got out of warranty by 5 days and this thing started souding garbled at first. Then the person I called can't hear me anymore. At times however, it would work, crystal clear. tried all the usual reset network, restore and stuff to no avail. Thing is, the mic and spkr work fine when I record on it and all. Its only when making a call or answering a call than I cannot be heard. I will bring it over to an Apple store this Thurs to see what they can do. I was wondering though if any of u guys know of a reputable repair place other than them. Apple would probably charge me an arm and a leg for it so....

take it to the apple store, as much as i disslike them they do a great job at keeping their sheep happy. with it being so close to the warrenty they will most likely cover it

I'd suggest trying the Skype app and doing an echo-test call on it. All free. just see if that works.

Since it's just out of warranty, I would take it in and attempt to butter up the genius people. I'd be really nice, talk about how much I love the phone, etc. etc. I'm always willing to grovel if I think it'll save me money. 🙂

While I'm groveling, if Apple wouldn't help, then I'd try AT&T next. They can do something to the phone remotely as long as you aren't using it, that sometimes does some magic. And if their mini-magic doesn't work, I'd call back to see if there's anything else that they can do.

Agreed. As long as there is no physical damage I would say you have a 90% chance of them covering it.

This is happenning to one of my IP4.
At first I thought it was my phone because I JB and unlocked it but after researching, it seems to be a common problem.
Mine is just like yours. Everything works, mic ect...but they other person cannot hear me.
I can hear them just fine.
The funny thing is someone who has the same problem said he hit the back of the phone and sometimes it works.
Sure it enough, I hit it and sometimes it would work.
It has to be a certain defect in the main board because I switch the same mainboard to another IP4 shell and its the same problem.
Something is up with the board.

Hey let me know how it goes.
Just make sure your phone is back to reset when you bring it to the Apple store(ie no JB).
I don't have that luxury as I use my IP4 for T-Mobile.

Thanks for the reply guys. I got an appt with a "Genius" tomorrow to see if they can do something about it.
I suddenly remember that South Park episode with the geniouses doing a "calling" or something. ;P

Update: Apple replaced the phone for free, citing a one time thing since its only out of warranty for 7 days. "Genius" said that it is the noise cancelling mic on top that gets overzealous and cuts out even the mic below for calls. Hardware issue they said and nothing was done to cause it or nothing can be done to prevent it.
Saved $199. Good deal!
