T&T to sell iPhone without contract
Associated Press
Article Launched: 07/01/2008 07:15:08 AM PDT

NEW YORK - AT&T will sell the new version of the iPhone without a service contract for $400 more than the price with a two-year plan, a break from the rules set when Apple's popular touch-screen gadget made its debut last year.

Two new models of iPhones go on sale July 11 for $199 and $299, depending on the amount of memory, with two-year AT&T contracts. The no-contract versions will cost $599 and $699 and will be sold sometime "in the future," AT&T said.

Buyers would then go month-to-month on AT&T's service. AT&T said the no-contract phones would be "locked" to work only on AT&T's network, as the contract-laden phones will be.

The new iPhones will have faster data access and more accurate navigation capabilities. The cheaper model will have 8 gigabytes for internal memory, half that of the more expensive model.

The first version of the iPhone was sold in the U.S. without a contract, but AT&T would activate it only with a two-year contract. Many phones ended up being "unlocked" from AT&T's network and shipped overseas.

Also today, AT&T revealed that the iPhones will go on sale at 8 a.m. local time July 11. Last year's iPhone launch, which happened in the evening, had Apple devotees camping outside stores in anticipation.

Jack Bauer couldn't get one. You think you could?

From what I understand you cannot simply extend your current ATT contract (start a brand new 2 year contract) if you are in the middle of it to get the $199 price. You would need to pay $399 for the 'upgrade'.

If it's true thankfully my contract is up at the end of July. Although I'd rather get it on the 11th.

Please. Jack Bauer would torture Steve Jobs, shoot his family, and torch the homes of his friends. Jack Bauer could get one early, and G-D BLESS AMERICA!

But, more seriously, for $600, I'd be looking at the HTC Touch Pro or the Touch Diamond, too.

Basically all phones and connection cards are available without contracts if you pay full retail price for them. What's hard is to find employees who understand that and can deal with it. :)

Because they are like Geek Squad. They don't know more then what they have been told, and cannot think rationally on their own.

I am surprised that the no contract phones will still be "locked" to AT&T (3rd paragraph). That, to me, largely defeats the point of buying it without a contract.

The iPhone is a really neat device - I'm typing this post on one - but I really think Apple messed up with all of their restrictions on them. They had the opportunity to really dominate the industry if they'd just unleashed it on all networks worldwide. I believe that their revenue sharing plan is a good idea to boost profits in the short-term but in the long-term I think it's a strategic mistake. They could have had an "Apple ][" sized impact on the worldwide communications industry if they sold them like iPod Touch's (with internal cell radios) and opened thevfilesystem access wide open.

Instead they limit themselves to a much smaller number of higher income consumers... If they'd opened the apps wide open, unlocked it, let it be used as a tether, open the bluetooth stack (the A2DP limitation is a software thing)... It would have really shaken things up, and given Apple a huge strategic advantage as the world moves from cell phones to always enabled portable Internet mini-laptops.

Except they are supposedly going to make you return the phone if you do that.

I'd like to see them try. How would they enforce that?

Who knows? They're forcing people to activate in-store at the time of purchase.. they can just make ETF's in-store only as well.

You should already be eligible for a phone upgrade. Check the at&t site, and it should tell you.
Or just call 611 on your phone.

Or they can just bill you at these new prices, which I gotta think is the plan. Why else would they be releasing these numbers, when you can't buy it at these prices? In the future...right.

If they have an affordable pay as you go plan i.e. $40 for 250 minutes+unlimited data. I will be down in a heartbeat. I will be in wifi service 80% of the time, but that 20% will be very useful for EDGE and 3G. I don't want the obligation to pay all the time, but buy when I need it would be fine for me.

it's good that they are selling it separately, but i wonder how hampered the phone is without a data plan (which, given that it's still locked to the ATT network, would probably be the only reason to buy it separately)... i get the impression that much of its software just assumes you have one and tries to download stuff on the web, which without a data plan would either be very expensive or just not work...

anyone here using the original iPhone without a data plan?

Not at all, we have a right to deny business especially on such a hot commodity. We won't sell the phone without contract for atleast a couple months after launch. And even then, most reps will not sell it as we don't get anything out of selling a phone at retail (no commission).

starting from next friday, we get the fully unlocked Iphone 3G in Belgium. SIM locking and all that crap is not allowed by law here.
The 8GB will cost ?525, the 16GB will cost ?615. No need to take a contract, because it's unlocked it will work on all 3 networks here.
