iPhone 3G unlocked by Dev-Team

😀

It's a bit disappointing it took them so long (we'll probably get another new iPhone in 6 months) but it's always cool when hacking wins. I am left wondering (at least in the USA) what possible use people would have for unlocking. You can't use 3G on T-Mobile.

Edit: The other issue is going to be that this is limited to the baseband that shipped with firmware 2.1 and earlier. This means that if it hasn't already happened, soon new iPhones won't be unlockable.

International Travel. I've amassed a collection of my sim cards from around the world 🙂

I already updated to 2.2 . . . is there a way to restore it back to baseband 2.1 for this unlock?

Because the cellular baseband was updated when he first did the 2.2 update, and restoring the iPhone to an older firmware version does not restore the baseband. You can only upgrade the baseband, it is not currently possible to downgrade it.

oh well .. . i wonder when they'd be able to unlock baseband 2.2 . . . iirc First gen iphone was unlocked by september 07, I wonder what made the iphone 3G that much harder to unlock . . .

1) Less drive, it was already being sold elsewhere unlocked, just at a higher price.
2) Apple got wise and used better security.

I assume you mean jailbroken. And there's a decent chance it won't, you'd need to find a root exploit on the iPhoneOS in order to execute the code needed to recover the encryption keys for the firmware. Root exploits aren't particularly easy to find since Apple stopped screwing around.

I am trying to learn all this unlock info. Does this mean that if you have 2.2 firmware there is no way to unlock an iphone for t-mobile? I know someone selling a few month old iphone and wanted to unlock it for t-mobile. I do not know the firmware yet. Were phones shipped with 2.2 or is it only an upgrade? If it is critical not to have 2.2, is there an easy way to check the version on the phone? thanks

You can't unlock the iPhone 3G if you have (or have ever had) firmware 2.2, more specifically modem/baseband firmware 02.28.00 or newer. I believe new phones are shipping with this firmware, but I am not 100% sure. You can check the firmware version by going to Settings->General->About; at the very bottom is the modem firmware version.

What about this? from what it shows there is no software change needed, just pop in this card with your sim and it works. If this works why bother with hacking the iphone. The phone still needs jailbreak(?) I see quickpwn is to jailbreak but the link in the op warns not to use quickpwn, I am so confused.

TurboSIM; basically an AT&T SIM melded with another SIM so that the phone thinks it's using an AT&T sim. They tend to be finicky, and from what I understand rough on your SIM slot.

I picked up this iphone today , it shows software version as 2.0.2 and modem firmware as 2.08.01, I dont have a mac so , can I jailbreak it? I have read tons of sites the last 5 days and I am really confused. iclarified said yes but it is telling me to use 2.2 ipsw file , I dont like that idea.

You're getting the generation of iPhones confused, there is no unlock for Gen II phones out yet.

Wait a few days, the unlocking software for Gen II phones will be out, and in the meantime, don't upgrade your software.

Can I jailbreak it? I think I need a jb phone to do the unlock. You are right I am really confused.

Can I/ should I jailbreak it? Are there instructions.

Is it a 3G phone?

Do you intend to use the phone on another carrier's service?

Do you want to install apps from unapproved sources?

It is a 3g,
I want to use it on Tmobile and
as far as the apps I do not know, lets say yes.

The unlock will be released tomorrow, and is necessary for it to be used on TMobile's service.

The apps are great, just jailbreak it when you unlock it.

My problem is that I dont know how to jailbreak it, or if it can be done. From what I read the unlock will use Cydia so I need to jailbreak first
I have an XP system, the JB instructions I found on iclarified seem to say that I will be upgraded to 2.28 firmware. I do not know what software to use or which ipsw file to use or if I need one.

Do I use quickpwn 2.2, but instead of having the 2.2 ipsw firmware like the tutorial states, I would have another lower level firmware on the desktop folder. My firmware is 2.08, do I have to find a 2.08 ipsw file or can I use a 2.1 file which would be an upgrade but still not the 2.2 ipsw?
