iPhone (3G) as modem?

So only jailbroken iphones can do this? I was hoping that they would make an application that could do this because it would my iphone the most valuable piece of gadgetry I've ever had.

AT&T doesn't want you tethering. 3G may not be fast, but a computer would have no problem slurping down well more than $30 worth of data. Data plans for cellular cards and the like cost more for this very reason.

Nada- wouldn't make any business sense at current iPhone data rates for AT&T. But yes, if you can Jailbreak the thing, you can tether it as a wireless modem. HowardForums.com has at least one good thread on it describing how to pull it off, in their Apple forum- just saw it today, and I think the ability was just cracked over the weekend. Likely by some poor sot with no girlfriend or anything better to do. And we thank him for that. 😀
