I saw this coming last week on George Hotz's blog. He is a bit annoyed that people are charging money for this unlock so he wanted the word spread that it is free.

for details on how it is, how it works and what to do:

It does a carrier unlock of the latest iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband. So you can put any SIM you want into the iPhone and it will work. Which is handy when travelling throughout the rest of the world, and useful if you use an iPhone on T-Mobile here in the US.

There may questions of the legality of this unlock (and the validity of a moderator posting about it). It's currently legally allowed under an exemption provision of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (37 CFR 201.40b, for the curious). This exemption expired Oct. 27, 2009, but has been extended temporarily until a ruling on it is made - probably later this year.

Get it while the getting is good, and post back if you have success or failure with it. The blackra1n jailbreak was slick so hopefully this new unlock is as well. If you have issues, make sure to reset your network settings and/or power cycle the phone.

And kudos to George Hotz and the "iPhone dev team" for unlocking the latest baseband.
