Ok guys i used to have one, I think it was a 3600 series or something, but anyway i sold it cause the battery life SUCKED. I'm talking 1 hour here. So I sell it and forget about it. Well i'm in the need for a new handheld and I got my eyes set on This 3835 IPAQ You know it says 10 hours battery life which is fine. But today I went over to my buddies house and he was showing me his 3700 series ipaq that he can't get more then an hour of battery life out of it with the brightness set to medium.

Now people, especially NFS4, I need you to tell me how good the battery life is going to be, and all the cool things I can do on my ipaq to seal the deal.

3800 series has a longer lasting battery than the 3600/3700 series

Quoted battery life will always be under idea circumstances (backlight off, low/no CPU load, etc.).

So should I take a gamble on this? or should I use that money on an ipod and use paper/pencil. Man what would really be sweet is the ipaq with that 1gb microdrive.

already exists. Purchase a PCMCIA sleeve and a 1gig IBM microdrive (the pcmcia sleeve has an extra battery; you will definatly need it with the microdrive).

I use an iPaq 3650 and the battery life is pretty good. I can listen to about 2.5+ hours of mp3s at one sitting w/ the screen on dim. As for normal activities, it seems to last long enough throughtout the day. I do alot of reading with AvantGo and schedule about 10 appointments a day. You might wanna also take a look at the Audiovox (rebadged Toshiba) PDA.

I know 1gb microdive exists, that's why i mentioned it, only problem is it's $1000 total, screw that.

How do you listen to 2.5 hours of mp3s if it can't even hold that much music? That's got to be a solid 80 megs for 2 hours of songs.

I have a CF sleeve (silver slider) and 2 CFs; one is a 64 meg and the other is a 48 meg. Actually, they aren't mp3s; they are WMAs (about half the file size for barely less quality).

Are the CF's easily swapable? Like if I had two and I used one only for music, and the other one for games, it's no big deal pulling out one and sliding in the other? I know you couldn't really do that with mp3 players with expansions, well atleast with my oldschool original rio.

<edit>

Also anyone know of a forum with all sorts of info and fun to do with the them?

Yes, swapping out CFs is painless. When I want to insert my "data" CF instead of my "music" cf, I just remove it from the sleeve and place the new one in. The iPaq rerecognizes the disk and goes on about its business. Checkout the following PDA forums for more info:

I have a 3870, and the battery life is decent. I was playing a game on it for most of the time on a 6-hour road trip. Still had 53% left when I reached my destination. Then most of the time on the return trip, reading an e-book. But I can't remember how much battery was left when I got home.

I did have the backlight turned off, though. That thing sucks batteries like you wouldn't believe!

I'd suggest waiting ever so slightly. The new XScale devices are coming out now and they will have significantly faster processor speed, less power drain, and from the specs I've seen, more memory. The new XScale HP Jornada was supposed to be out this week. The low-end model was going to have 400MHz and 64MB RAM. Too bad it got the axe with the Compaq merger.

Most brands other than the iPAQ include the CF slot so that you don't need the cost and bulk of an added slider.
