I just got my iPad3 and was trying to test out how high res images look on the retina display. I viewed a photo I've taken that is saved as 1920x1200 resolution, but when Safari pulls it up, it's not being shown at the native res, rather it's 960x640. What gives?

Have you tried double tapping on the picture? Also try opening it with Firefox. Firefox > Safari

mobile safari downsamples images. From tomshardware review:

...when it comes to pictures and images, the mobile version of Safari automatically downsamples any image when it hits the 1024-pixel limit. When an image exceeds that threshold, it's downsampled by every nth pixel, such that n is the smallest divisor that yields an image less than or equal to 1024 pixels.

LOL! Sure, for iPad1/2 that makes sense, but for the new one it really sucks! I guess Apple will fix that though...

Doesn't the new iPad report itself as a 1024*768 display to websites? Otherwise you would get the same problem you have on widescreen desktop monitors when you full screen the browser, huge swathes of white (or whatever background) and TINY little text in the middle.
