iPad wi-fi reception problems: software or hardware based?

I have read comments about the wi-fi reception problems of the iPad, but haven't done extensive Google research yet.

What is current consensus: is this a software problem that will be easily solved, or a hardware based problem with the antenna that won't be fixed until the second revision of the iPad is released (1 year later?)
