iPad Survives 100,000+ Foot Fall From Space

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4xNcF6T7Is

What a sick case. Apparently these guys are well known for their "xtreme" cases and what not. But I think the real question is, as the top current youtube comment says, what video camera they used that was able to film that unprotected. Crazy free fall though.

They used a gopro camera. I think it says it somewhere on their site.

Pretty sweet video. Only thing that I dont like about it is the counterweight they put on the bottom. They made sure that the case would only fall on its back. Im sure it would shatter (like any other tablet) if it fell with the glass facing forward.

Still pretty impressive.

Is the screen covered by anything? From the video it looks like it isn't...

I don't think it is. I just had a look at their website a few min ago and it looks like they offer a portfolio and just and edge case too. This seems like it's one of the edge cases. Covers the back, sides and has a lip up around the front edge.

Probably true. I would love to see them just free fall with the portfolio case that covers the whole phone. But even so, having this thing drop from that high with no parachute and have it survive no matter where it took the impact, is amazing. I might have to look at these cases.

Ah so that explains it.

I was gonna say, give me 2 minutes with that case and I could crack the iPad from 5ft. 😉

Cool video nonetheless.

What surprises me more than anything else is that the lithium ion battery in the GoPro was ok with -45C at ~100k. I'm really surprised that the camera didn't stop recording.

The case is neat - although the weight certainly skews things, but I'm actually even more impressed with GoPro's camera.

Nice video though. Thanks for posting it.

Yeah, that and the camera made it come down like a sycamore seed. I'd love to know what its vertical speed was.

BS
my ipad 2 is in an ipad 1 case, fell a few feet on concrete and shattered. by accident it hit a corner that was barely protected.

this thing had all kinds of other gear over the case to take the fall first

I think its true, they were just very careful how it fell.

Cool video though.

So the point is you used a case that didn't fit and your ipad broke?

I think the weight played a big part but they do offer a case that is portfolio style case that covers the front and back. They also offer a sleeve that supposedly does the same thing.

Meh, if they allowed it to properly free fall so the corner hits the ground, it would've shattered like ANY DEVICE THAT'S A GLASS SLATE.

why do people buy super thin phones and tablets only to cover them up with thick ugly cases???
i would be impressed if they make a thin phone/tablet that can survive a drop without a stupid case.

I would bet even money that the iPad would survive that fall without a case... if it was weighted to hit the back and land softly in the sand like this one.

did it go straight up and then pretty close to straight down? Couldn't that have killed somebody in a populated area?

also, it would split up if it happened to fall on one of the sides. IE if you put a spin on it when you dropped it, it would plummet like a rock. As it is the terminal velocity of something the weight of an ipad with 1sqft cross section is probably pretty low like 30mph.

TBH, I'm not that surprised. I wonder how long this whole process took.

As the iPad ascends, the heat transfer coeff should start dropping. With the air getting less and less dense, convective heat transfer decrease and reaches essentially 0 once in "space". The heat transfer due to radiation of a low temperature, yellow object isn't going to be that great.

In the video, most of the force seems to be applied to the center of the back of the ipad due to the attached device. Between the device taking some of the force, the force being applied to the thickest foam of the case and also the strongest part of the ipad (my ASSumption), this seems "neat" but not extraordinary.

Bravo to their marketing team or whomever came up with this idea.

Thanks for sharing OP.

Cos if you get a thick phone and then put a case on it it'd be huge.:sneaky:
