ipad mirroring question

So Im not really all that familiar with apple stuff. I use a nexus 7/nexus 4 at home, and have used the chromecast mirroring feature before, and it works awesome.

I use an ipad at my school, and it would be great to be able to mirror the entire screen in the same way that the chromecast does with my nexus devices. I cant remember for sure, but I remember my friend showing me it a few years ago, and it didnt work nearly as good as the chromecast. I thought I remember there being a delay, or not actually mirroring the whole screen or something like that.

What are my options for mirroring the ipad right now? (preferably wirelessly)

AppleTV. You have 2 options with it, option 1: AirPlay will simply take the content that you have (music, video), and beam it to your TV. Just the content will be there, formatted (if video) for your TV. Option 2: Mirroring. Your entire iPad screen is beamed to your TV, and it will be letterboxed (due to 4:3 vs. 16:9). Some apps forbid mirroring, so if you switch to them, it will just be black on the TV (or will flip back to what you were last doing with your AppleTV.

I would definitely need mirroring then. Im mostly using it for education apps, so I would assume they let you mirror. Not really concerned with beaming music or video. I currently have a computer hooked up to the projector, but Ive been thinking about getting something for the ipad so it would make demonstrations easier.

Is there any specific model of apple TV I need? Or do they all do the same thing? And since I also have the computer - there isnt just a way to use that as a passthrough is there?

iPod touch 5th gen would be great with mirroring since the screen is 16:9 when horizontal...but the A5 processor is getting old now.

Maybe an iPhone 5c (A6) or 5s (A7)?

It's hard to suggest an iPhone 6 Plus to be dedicated for that purpose, but 16:9 1920x1080 is a perfect match.

If you can disable overscan on the TV, make sure you disable the overscan compensation in the Apple TV settings. Native aspect/resolution AirPlay mirroring is great 🙂

And since I also have the computer - there isnt just a way to use that as a passthrough is there?

1) You can also just use a video output from the iPad. People overlook that.

2) There are utilities that run on your Windows PC or other device and pretend to be an AppleTV, so the iPad can stream/mirror to them. Reflector is one, AirServer is another.
