iPad Mini Tapping Sound

Hey all,

Recent picked up an iPad mini with retina display after selling my iPad 3. While I love the size of the iPad, I am finding the sound of tapping the screen very distracting. I did some research and found they switched the material they use for the touch layer, using something other than glass to save weight. It's considerably louder than it was on my old iPad.

Anyone else notice this louder tap? I'm not usually sensitive to things like this but as I usually use my iPad in quiet rooms at night, it's annoying to the point I'm thinking about returning it. 🙁

Maybe that's an aftermarket screen or an accessibility feature that has been enabled? There is no perceptible sound when I tap the screen on my mini or my mini retina.

It was brand new from Best Buy so shouldn't be anything aftermarket. It's also definitely coming from the taps themselves, not from any sound playing through the speaker.

I agree that the Air sounds and feels more hollow than the Retina iPads. I think it is just thinner glass for the touch layer. Next gen hopefully they move to a bonded display which would allow the middle of the display area to be tied down better to the rest of the frame.
