So I've had it for about a week, and I love it more and more every day.

The thing I hear most is that the iPad can't replace a laptop...and that's true. If you were to have one computer, and one computer only, and you desire even mild portability around the house, you should probably get a laptop, because everyone needs at least one machine optimized for doing work. But if you have a desktop, it's a different story altogether.

I've got a desktop, a laptop, an iPad, and an iPhone. I've got options here. And you know what? The thought of using a laptop to surf the web on my couch is almost repulsive to me now. To have to use an awful touchpad instead of just touching the link. To have a hot, heavy, laptop that I have to balance in my lap in order to do anything, even watch a movie. Even worse, a net book, which is too small and awkward to hold, running software than it can barely handle if it all.

Basically, I had a revelation - if iPad like devices had existed for years, and then some company came out with the first laptop in 2010, people would have the same doubts about them as they do now about the iPad. You'd realize you didn't need one, and why on earth would someone want to use something so inconvenient? This is of course, assuming you have a desktop. Because sometimes you need a real computer.

But let's not understate what they've pulled off here. It has limitations for sure, but the device is just so wonderful to use. It always immediately responds to your input...that can't always be said for PCs. The user interface is beautiful beyond anything available on the desktop - it's so incredibly fluid, everything is animated at a silky smooth frame rate....basically, interacting with it just feels right, and it doesn't have to compromise performance in order to look nice. And they managed this with a mobile 1ghz processor and 256mb of ram, specs that pale even compared to a net book? It's almost impossible to believe, but they pulled it off.

Honestly, it's better compared to a game console than anything else. A specialized device, with software written to take full advantage of the hardware, letting nothing go to waste. Eye candy is taken seriously - and why shouldnt it be? A device intended to be very good at content consumption, but still have the capability to pull off the basics of creation. And unlike PCs, but like consoles, it just *works*. Forget everything you ever knew about drivers, antivirus, performance issues, complicated installs, files...everything is either built in or installs with one click.

And did I mention the screen is gorgeous, weighs less than 2 pounds, and the battery lasts 10 hours...10 hours!

It's going to be a luxury item for a while, but man, what a luxury it is.

I'd also like to note that the apple case is totally worth the money. It feels rubbery on the outside, and gives a nice grip, but is very lightweight and adds little to the size or weight. Even though I'm sure the screen is durable, having a flip cover is reassuring.

But the main draw is the built in catch on the back that props it up. It gives you a decent angle instead of it laying flat, which is great for viewing if you've got it on a desk or table. It also makes typing posts like this quite a bit easier. Turn it around, and it makes a great vertical stand, good for watching movies, for laying on your chest in bed/couch, or as a photo frame, especially as you charge it.

It's not compatible with the dock, but that's alright - I'm gonna return the dock, since it works fine to just prop it up with the case while it charges, taking up just as little space on my desk.

i ordered the quirky.com one - hopefully they make it lol.

I will post the pepsi challenge when i get my 3G model going.

Dell Mini-9 2GB osx 10.5.something versus ipad

Ipad being more than 3 times as expensive - so it better be jailbroken :) to help alleviate the cost differential.

the ability for me to lay on the couch and surf - laptop having its base/keyboard to lay on my belly is paramount since i don't have to hold (my iphone currently) which adds strain.

I am playing with one at the store right now, and i have got to say that this isn't too bad. The keyboard is a little weird and i have had to make a few corrections to this post, but al in all i think that i could definitely get used to something like this. Definitely not going to be getting it any time soon, but maybe one day.

I've been playing with my work iPad and I'm enjoying it. It's like a lightbulb...it's not earth-shattering, but once you have it, you can't live without it. It fills a niche you didn't know existed. It just kind of seamlessly fits into your life, like Kleenexes or something - just something you have there, as an available resource, which is really nice to have when you need it. That may sound weird, but once you use one for more than 10 minutes at home, you're like "gee that's handy!". Throw it on the couch or table, pick it up when you want to check some info or do something entertaining. I've nicknamed it "insta-tech", because you just press the home button and you're ready to go!

Kids are going to LOVE this thing - ebooks, drawing apps, videos, all kinds of neat stuff for them to play with and learn from. I showed it to my parents yesterday and the first thing my mom said was, your grandma needs one of these. That's how intuitive it is. I had people at work stopping by to play with it all day, young and old, and no one needed an explanation. People 50+ picked it up right away and started using it. Apple really nailed it on the user-friendly mark!

Safari is superb. I LOVE reading Engadget on it, haha. Youtube is surprisingly clear. I watch a lot of product reviews and it's so handy to just pick it up and type something in, or learn something, like how to change a door knob or fix a plumbing thing in your bathroom. Games are pretty fun. I see it as a quick info-entertainment device - look up recipes, watch a funny video, google something, read an article on Wikipedia, look up movie information on IMDB, whatever - it's just easy!

I don't think this replaces an iPhone. I ditched AT&T due to bad service in my area, and thus my iPhone, and I'm still waiting for Verizon to come out with the it. The iPad isn't exactly pocket material, but it's not like it's hard to tote around everywhere. If I owned one for personal use, it would go everywhere, because I usually have a messenger tote bag or a backpack with me to easily store it in. I would not bring it into something like a restaurant though, which is where the iPhone would win because it's so small.

At some point, I'll probably end up with a 3G iPad :awe:

I've had the ipad since opening day.

It's the future. Get used to it.

The backlash is very similar to what people thought of the first apple computer that made use of the graphic interface with mouse. DOS was much more powerful, they argued. We all know what happened with that.

For non-pro content consumers (if 90% of what you do is surf, watch videos, etc.), then this will be pretty high on the want list. The battery life is to die for. It runs cold. Plus, i hear it's a chick magnet (must test this out).

Chick magnet confirmed. Just put Plants vs. Zombies on it and you're gold :D

I can definitely see the usefulness of such a device...just not in the same way that Apple has made it. So I think a bit of both; the iPad itself is fail, but the tablet PC could have the potential to be a very useful device.

If that is the case, why hasn't it already happened?

Tablet pc's have been out for years in one form or another, and high quality capacitive touchscreens have been out for 3-4 years at least (just look at the original iphone for proof of that), so if Apple can make a successful tablet pc then that would be something new.

See, that's the thing...there's already an Apple tablet, and it's been around for years:

http://www.vincentchow.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/idecay.png

Integrated GPS, Wacom digitizer pen (pressure-sensitive), up to 6GB RAM, max 1.28TB HDD, you name it. But it's not tablet-friendly. Then people say well why don't they just make touch-friendly apps. Hello! That's what an iPad is! Haha.

The reason Tablets haven't taken off is twofold:

1. They have been too big & heavy, even current crop of 12" models (even the 10" netbooks w/ swivel screens)

2. The interfaces stink and are not touch friendly. The OS needs to be stupid-simple, which equals super stable, like the iPad OS.

I can totally see the iPad taking off with the non-techie market. Older people love reading the news on it - it's a simple, straightforward Internet device.

Nobody knew there was a market for this. Just like the iPod exposed such a huge market in portable media devices, I think the iPad will expose a huge market in tablet PCs - and I mean actual PCs, with x86 architecture running a (dare I say it) a proper OS and fully compatible with normal desktops and laptops.

But my point is that the pre-ipad tablets came with a "normal" windows OS. The market was exposed to these types of tablets for years. Are you saying that the only thing that held back the tablet pc market was the lack of processing power able to fit in a small form factor?

Apple just announced that the iPad international launch is delayed by one month due to "surprising" US demand. They said they sold 500,000 in the product's first week...

They are gonna hit 1,000,000 before they even get to the 3G version lol.

Once you figure out that this thing isn't a computer, the idea of it is much better. It's not intended to replace your laptop, nor your phone. In a sense, this thing is a tablet, but not a tablet pc. Where other products have tried and failed is in the tablet pc space.

Think of it this way. You ride the metro to work in the morning - many of us near DC do. We don't whip out laptops on the train to read the news, listen to music, or anything like that. We either bring a magazine, have an ipod on, or try to surf on our phone. The iPad is the ipod, replaces the magazine, and lets you do a few other things pretty well.

I'm still pissed off on principle that it lacks certain things. Not being able to store PDFs is one of them. I'm a lawyer, I read PDFs a LOT. I shouldn't have to pay for an app to do it. I'm really, really interested to see if Fastcase makes an enhanced app for it - for the other attorneys around here, you probably already know that they have a free app for the iphone. This could be far greater. A single USB port or card reader would've been nice too. This thing is basically asking to be used as a picture frame when you're visiting relatives. Can xfer via iTunes, but popping in the right SD card before leaving the house would be easier.

I'm going to wait for the 3G version, but I will buy one most likely. I can see the line I draw between this and my laptop being anything where I'm doing work - things involving lots of typing, or multiple background tasks. But as a leisure accessory or passive reading device, this thing is going to be great. 90% of what Apple produces is in consumer electronics anyway, not the productivity segment. The iPad is absolutely no different. It's sleek and helps dorks in coffee shops waste time. And for me, it will help me pass time on the metro, read documents on the go, and maybe watch a little Netflix in bed.

If there was anybody who ever drank the Apple koolaid it would be me. My apartment rivals most Apple stores (iphone, apple tv, macbook pro, blutooth keyboard/mouse).

I bought an iPad on launch day after playing with it for about 30 minutes. Then, a week later I returned it.

Why? Well, I just couldn't figure out what to do with it. It was very easy to use, got great battery life, and the screen was incredible. I loaded it up with some free ePubs (Sherlock Holmes, etc) downloaded all the free HD apps I could get and did everything I could on it, but still couldn't figure out why to keep it.

Here is my current list of gripes:
1. without WiFi it's pretty useless. I brought it to work to show off, and it was basically preloaded videos and iBookstore only. Maybe a game or 2. iPhone with 3G has definitely spoiled me with the always-on connection.

2. Magazines/eBooks - too effing expensive right now. Most cost the same as their physical counterparts (with the exception of Zinio subscriptions) Also, I'm not going to take the iPad the same places I take books/mags as I'll be worried about damaging it. Even the HD App prices are pretty ridiculous.

3. No file system. I hate the fact that I'm saying this (really!), but I can't download and save a PDF attachment to view later? Or get a zip file full of wallpapers and open it? I don't to run Photoshop or set up a Git server, just minor things. Its like 80% a computer, and its annoying when it doesn't work all the way through. I know there are apps for that, but it should have been baked-in IMHO.

4. It's "too big"/heavy. 1.5lbs doesn't sound like much, but it does have some heft/density and my hand started to ache a bit after holding it 1 handed for some time. Especially while trying to type in the portrait keyboard with 1 index finger. On the iPhone, I can run nearly the same apps (games not counted) and hold the device with 1 hand and surf with my thumb. I actually appreciated the iPhone much more after playing with the iPad.

5. WiFi issues. These will eventually be corrected (are are to be expected on new hardware), so minor gripe for now.

My apartment is probably 800 sq feet. When in the living room, laptop is about 7 feet away, and my phone is usually on my person. Other than the larger screen (which, again, is VERY nice) I couldn't figure out when to use it. I would have to put down my phone and pick up the iPad purposly to use it. I did read an eBook (or a couple chapters anyway) and it was very nice, esp in landscape. But, I used the Kindle app and can do that on the iPhone too...

Anyway, overall I think its a decent product and I'll eventually pick up a 3G version when they update the hardware. I didn't pick up an iPod till the mini, so I'll probably wait a couple years until they iron out the bugs.

Those are interesting points W.P. I was considering getting one as a gift for my wife, but I couldn't figure out how she'd use it either. Looks like she'll get a watch instead lol.

I am spending my $500 on getting a new MTB wheelset and waiting for Android tablets that address the iPad's shortcomings. No point jumping on the first device in a slew of these coming this year, at a better price point.

Interesting take on this thing and honestly, you probably explained exactly how I'd end up using and then ditching the iPad. Thanks for saving me $500. :D

As I mentioned earlier, I am the biggest Apple "fanboy" amongst all my friends and have steered several of them towards the Apple platforms if I used and enjoyed them, but I don't know what the heck to do with the iPad.

I'd be one thing if I had a very specific use case for it, such as as a eBook reader with all my technical documents on it, but it doesn't allow file support (unless you pay for an app, which they in turn could reject/block on a whim) or if you buy it as an eBook/iBook for as much as the paperback.

As for surfing in Safari, it is very nice and quick, but MAN I didn't realize how many ads are embedded all over the place. I would looooooooove for an AdBlock type program, especially if I'm paying $15 for only 250MB of data transfer. I welcomed the lack of flash to be honest.

adblock = icab mobile browser. 2 bucks. Haven't seen an ad since, also has plenty of other features on top of safari.
