iPad 2 $299 @ Walmart YMMV

Picking up a few things at Walmart tonight and they had a big sign advertising the 16GB iPad 2 for $299, even cheaper than a refurb from Apple. Don't know if it's chain wide or just mine but worth a look if for some odd reason you are in the market for one.

Black Friday 2013 Target Deal for iPad Air was = $356 with $100 Instant Discount + 5% Target credit card discount.

I don;t see why would i want to spend $299 on iPad 2?

Please, no thread crapping in Hot Deals.

Good deal OP if they are brand new. 🙂

Yeah brand new. Was by there again yesterday and they were still doing it. Read an article a while back Apple was finally winding down production of them so they may be just trying to clear inventory.

Because black Friday is only one day of the year? And on that day it's a limited supply?

Let's have some common sense here.

yah, thats not a good deal. you are buying an ancient(in technology terms) piece of hardware that is only marginally cheaper then a modern alternative.

facetime got his BF figures wrong, but the premise is correct. Don't buy 3 year old gadgets at relatively high prices.

You could even make the argument that if this was an iPad 3, $299 is iffy. Although that came with a beefed up SoC and Retina display, people feel the GPU is barely able to handle all the pixels. So while it's a fine device, it isn't as future proof as one would imagine.

iPad 2??? That should be like $99.

WalMart is a good place to buy apple products actually. I got two iPhones there when the local suspects had none and it was cheaper. However; it took about 1+ more hour than it should.

I never go into WalMarts normally unless they are the only store open or they have something cheaper I need and I have time to burn.

That said the WalMart at RTP was impressive. People in suits and stuff.

EDIT: OMG how is all this deal crapping allowed in Hot Deals? Most of you members know better!

Please. No thread crapping in Hot Deals. That includes remarks not about the deal and negative remarks about other members.

I got paid $200 for my iPad 1 just a few months back at Target. So I could view that as me only paying $100 for an iPad 2 with this deal but i'll likely get the iPad 5 whenever I feel the urge to actually buy another tablet.

Im not trying to crap either, but what is Apples motivation for keeping the ipad 2 as their lower cost option? I would think they would have moved the 3 or 4 to the low cost option by now.

it sorta made sense for Apple because the iPad 2 and original iPad mini were on the same platform, and shared a lot of components. (I believe the Apple TV has a similar A5 variant as well.)

IIRC the A5X and A6X SoCs in the iPad 3/4 had huge dies and thus were much more expensive to manufacture. Considering the iPad 2 was never cheap (not even at $299), it probably carried a better profit margin for Apple vs. continuing the iPad 4 as the step-down model.

From a consumer standpoint, it was a raw deal of course. You were simply better off getting the first iPad mini.

I understand the rules about no TCing, but I think healthy and critical deal discussion is valuable for fellow forum readers.

The iPad2 is what a lot of institutions are buying. Our local school district bought a lot of them, and is still ordering more. So I think Apple is still selling a lot of them through their business channels. I sold my iPad2 when the iPad air came out, and picked up a used iPad4 in great shape, with the total upgrade cost ~$60. While the screen on the iPad2 is not as good as the retina display of newer models, is still runs everything nice and smooth, and I would call this a good price.

Got one free with my Dish Network plan. After using it for six months I don't see how that's a good deal. I'd rather get a Chromebook with a proper keyboard and track pad for the price. No, this isn't thread crapping - its my honest opinion as an owner.

this is becoming apple vs competition and tablet vs <laptop.

Why haven't you bought the Chromebook then?

Love them or hate them, the iPad is big today.

I used to own two (one company supplied, one I bought), currently I have no need.

A laptop gets me by (my laptop is a Macbook Pro running Windows 7 and Mavericks in convergence). My desktop is a AMD 955 just under 4GHz.

I am targeting another iPad soon for family members that would have great benefit from one.

Ask and ye shall receive. I was wondering the same thing - they probably had the components of the iP2 ridiculously cheap and making crazy margin. It'd be nice if they dropped the 4 down to $299 too 🙁

They've been making them this long because they keep selling them. Schools and business have spend thousands on carts that charge/sync them. It's just easier/cheaper to replace them with more 2's than upgrading to something new. Apple announce a couple days ago the iPad 2 is gone, which explains this price drop, and is being replaced with the iPad 4.
