If it's got iOS 5.X on it then avoid like the plague. Crash city and simply unusable for a lot of web browsing. It was fine under 4.X.

"Good" price is subjective too....I got $250 for my 32 gig, 3G enabled 1st gen back in March. If you don't need the space you are better off getting a refurb 2nd gen for $350 through Apple. Cameras, thinner, lighter, and dual processors make a nice bump over the 1st gen.

I bought my brothers' ipad 1 when he bought the new ipad. It has IOS 5 on it, and it hasn't been crash city. My kids(10 yrs old) use it all the time without any problems. When I use it I haven't had any problems either. I never have used IOS 4, but I have not seen any issues with 5.

I have an iPad 1 and 2 both on 5.1 and they've been updated the day of or shortly after for all iOS releases and we've never had any crashes nor been to "crash city".

It isn't but that doesn't make it useless. The original iPad is perfect for light use and watching videos. I hear iOS 5.1 largely clears up the slowdowns, though if you want to jailbreak, you're stuck with 5.0.1. Speaking of which, the iPad 1 is the only model that can be jailbroken indefinitely. Limera1n is a hardware exploit. Unfortunately progress has been slow on 5.1 since I think hackers are loosing interest in the A4 platform.

My wife loved "her's" I had from my previous company.

I may be buying her an iPad3 in a couple days. Debating 32 vs 64 and wheter to go 4g. She is a movie/TV watcher on her lunch breaks.

My understanding is that especially now that it is 4G (and on verizon with free tethering) then the 4G is totally worth it if you think that you will be without freely available wifi on a regular basis. The 4G is fast, and with tethering, you can use it as your own personal hotspot.

I don't see why. There are still plenty of 4th gen ipods and iphone 4's out there as well as original ipads.

I have an iPad 1 running 5.01 with an untethered jailbreak - unlocked multi-touch gestures.

Haven't had a single crash... iOS5 > iOS4.x for me on my iPad 1.
