1. Install "Print Services for Unix" on Windows box
Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Other Network File and Print Services

2. Allow TCP/IP Service through Windows Firewall (If running one)
Allow either C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcpsvcs.exe or the IP of your Mac, just as long as the Mac can punch through that firewall.

3. Share Printer on Windows box

4. Install relevant driver on Mac if available

5. Configure printer on Mac
IP Printing
LPD - Line Printer Daemon
IP = IP of your Windows Box
Queue = Share name you defined when you shared out the printer on the Windows box
Driver = Choose your model, if you installed the driver it should be there.

6. Print away!

I just tested this with my WinXP box, MacBook Pro, and Samsung ML-2010 connected through USB. The Samsung didn't like the Generic Postscript driver, so I had to go to Samsung's site to grab the appropriate OS X drivers.

Good luck!

Canon ip1500

I tried that but the drivers do not show up on the list, I did install the OS X drivers ... can i get this to work? or is my best bet is to buy a print server:

Thanks!

Very likely the device must support Postscript.

well the usb drivers for the printer does work.

That is very vague information. Details please? ie: printer model, how it's connected, to what, is it shared, how is it shared etc.

Ok. My reply was in assumption to this exact configuration. In the past, Macs were never able to print to a Windows share with the exception of postscript supported printers while using the "printing services for Macintosh." I don't believe the IP series support postscript so I doubt you'll get it to work.

The other and in fact, better option is to get a little print server from Canon that officially supports Macintosh and TCP/IP printing.

That's not bad at all. Did you call Canon? Most importantly, get something supported by Canon.

I recommend that you call Canon and ask what print server works on Macintosh for your particular model rather than waste further time trying to figure it out because you'll end up getting the same thing anyway. Expect to spend at least $150.
