The summary says it all -- looking for a simple little app to monitor my WAN address which seems to change rather frequently on DSL. All I need is it to update every few minutes and email me when it changes and what to. I ran IP Monster for awhile, but after SP2 I had some problems with it hanging and maxing out my CPU doing nothing... so I need something umm... better.

That's why I come here... :) I've actually been using DynDNS for awhile and never noticed they had update clients! As that's my host, I'll get that setup right now! Thanks!

No problem. I recommend the DirectUpdate client if you're using a windows system, I've had no problems with it.

I'm actually interested in this very thing (IP monitoring with e-mail notification), but I don't know what dynamicdns.org is. Is this something I would have to pay for? What do I need to get started? Please help! I'm leaving the country for three weeks tomorrow and I want to be able to remote in should I need to. Thanks.

It's free. Go to www.dyndns.org and sign up for an account. If you have DSL or a cable modem, you'll want a static DNS. You create your own address for it (with the dyndsn.org extension) and then install a little tool on your PC that will update the DNS for it should it change. Then you'll always be able to go to xxx.dyndns.org and connect to your home PC.

I think it's a pretty straightforward setup, but if you have any questions check the FAQs there or post here, I'll help you out.

Thanks, seistmik, I'll check it out.

Upon further review, are you sure I want Static DNS? I have a cable modem. If my IP was static, I wouldn't need to worry about it changing, would I? I'm not questioning you, just confused. Their website says "Dynamic DNS service points a fixed hostname in one of our domains to your ISP-assigned dynamic IP address, allowing your computer to be accessed from various locations on the Internet without knowing your current IP." Isn't that what I want?

also, what do i put under hostname? I'm so confused. help! i'm a moron!
