how does it work? and can i do this without running linux. right now i get access to the net through a firewall/router that is connected to a cable modem....
When you set the machine that is ip masquerading as the gateway on a machine, it does a number of things. For example, say you have a windows machine and you try to hit up a url. It'll tell the gateway that it wants that web page and the gateway will get it and to the other side it looks like the gateway machine made the query. It simply gets the data back to the windows machine seamlessly. You can do it w/o linux. Many people use windows with ICS or my favorite, a program called sygate.
