easiest way would be to power down your cable modem for an indeterminate amount of time.

You don't have to put me down - I just ask you guys simple question.
I do have a legit reason to do this.
If you can't answer and help me your reply is not needed.

Your IP address is set by your internet service provider, you cannot just 'change' it to whatever you want.

By rebooting your modem you are asking the provider to give you a new address, but this can only be within a small range which they have access to.

Why do you want to completely change the address? Do you wish to hide your location?

Actually, you're fueling speculation AND posting a question in a public forum -- don your flame suit and deal with it. I can't personally think of a single reason that you NEED to change your IP. Changing IPs provides absolutely NO level of privacy or protection behind a competent ISP anyway.

That being said, change the MAC address on your Internet-facing router or computer. Then reboot your cable modem and acquire a new lease using the new MAC address. The CMTS should issue a new IP to you. Don't whine if it's in the same subnet, you shouldn't be concerned about having a fruitlessly dynamic IP anyway.

They don't always issue a new IP with a modem reset. I know Time Warner doesn't.

I'd bet good money that he's trying to get around an IP ban at some online forum.

If you didn't nail this, I bet you'er right in the ballpark. Why do I even care what my IP is (other than internal machines).

You'd have to wait for the lease to expire. Around here Comcast uses a 1 day lease so you'd have to wait between 12 and 24 hours I believe for the lease to expire.

And OP... your ISP has only been assigned so many IP blocks... even if they wanted to, they couldn't give you an endless number of IP addresses to get yourself back onto forums or Counter-Strike servers you've been banned from.

Nice way to dodge the question. If this does in fact have to do with changing your IP to get unbanned from somewhere (only reason I know of), please do us a favor and not ask it here.
