i just got a new linksys lan card on my 2nd computer to connect it to the new linksys router i just got. i installed it and everything, but when i run WINIPCFG and click on the linksys lan card, where it is supposed to give me the IP address, it gives me "IP Autoconfigure address" and a wak number. i set it to "obtain IP adress automatically in the properties, and instead of getting the Router ip i just gets this "autoconfigure" address. Also, it doesnt find the other computer....
...yea im a newbie to this stuff...:|

The Linksys router offers DHCP, which is a fancy acronym for "passing out IP addresses to computers". Is the first system plugged in to the router? If so, does it have an IP assigned?

If the first is plugged in, and is getting an IP address, then we can eliminate the router as the problem. That would leave three things: The cable, the NIC, or the network configuration on the second system.

Cables are rarely bad (assuming you didn't make it yourself - I've made a few bad ones🙂). But, that could be a possibility. Make sure it's seated correctly and is a straight-thru, not a crossover.

Check the network configuration on the second system, and make sure that it is identical to the first.

Also, if you didn't reboot the second system after plugging it in to the router, do so. One other thing is to reset the router. There is a small hole on the front with a button inside. Pushing it in once, quickly, resets it. Hold it in for 3 seconds or more, sets it back to defaults.
