You get an IP address from your ISP. Each ISP has an assigned number of IPs and uses them for their customers. You can't own an IP address. You can "rent" one from an ISP.

if you start your own ISP you could own your own ip

that might be fun if you are a bored millionaire

My cousin owns her own ISP (she's not a millionaire, either). They do dialup and ISDN. She doesn't "own" the IPs, either. She rents them. Hell, ATTBI doesn't "own" their IPs either. They have a set group that they "rent" and can manage, but they don't own them outright. Any IP can be yanked from any ISP at any time. :)

so you have to be something bigger/faster/stronger than an ISP or something

i guess you always get your ip from the pipe upstream of you, regardless of what they are called/you are called

Some groups do indeed "own" IP space. Note ARIN did not exist the entire time address space was doled out.

Now note huge companies having more IP space than some Tier1's, and using maybe a /21. Hrm.

Uh... no, they don't. They don't own public IPs. They can own all the internal IPs they want, but those aren't routable for internet use. Two people can have the same exact IP provided that it's an internal IP and they're on different networks.

Anyway, unless you're UUNET or something like that, you won't own your IP. Period.

There is a plan underway now to increase the amount of IP addresses to the point that every man woman and child on the planet could have their own and their would still be more left over for a few more planets.

I do not knowwhen it will be implimented, but soon I hope. We are running out of IP addresses now, hence, subnetting and super netting.;)

Actually, they can own them. "Public" simply means routable on the outside world as opposed to subnets reserved for private use only.
