IP 35 pro finally bit the dust. What Should I do?

Haha, tragic irony here. I was extremely excited about BD, even though my expectations were somewhat tempered by the INCREDIBLY LONG delay. So, my ip35 pro went kaput yesterday. It actually died, then I somewhat resurrected it, but it was making this extremely eerie keening noise like a ghost from a halloween movie. So here are my options:

1. Give the i7 920 @ 4.0 to my 5/4 year olds. They can play Dora/Diego/etc on it and help me look for aliens while they're at it. Sell my old ddr2 and x3350. Buy a new i7 2500k cpu/mobo/ram and plug that into the old rig.

2. Keep the i7 920, buy a new 1366 cpu + ram for my other evga 1366 sli mobo (still in the wrapper, don't ask). Sell old ddr2 and x3350.

3. Buy a new skt 775 mobo, don't sell anything at all.

4. Throw caution to the winds and buy a BD cpu/mobo/ddr3 just because money is no object and I'm dumb as a box of rocks still pining for the old days of AMD competitiveness.

What do you guys think? Whatever I do, it'll likely be either some sort of swap for parts on fs/ft or maybe just eyeballing deals on BF.

Considering microcenters retard sale of 2500k, i can't see how anyone wouldn't just go buy 5 of em, just to have in stock, just in case.
sell to friends.

Hurry your ass down there - Us western euro's dream of such prices.

With Ivy coming it seems like a good next summer upgrade, if you get a Z68 board.

We're gonna get penalized and need a new socket for haswell anyway.

Piledriver/BD+ will improve but i' wouldn't put money on "enough" to validate it's price.

I support you in Option 3. I mean, what the heck. At the same time, if you are going to Microcenter you could just opt for the 2600k @ $280. At least it would stand a good chance of being faster than what you have.

That beasty Xeon should fetch a good little sum on the FS/FT sub if you get it there in a timely manner 🙂

Hmmm... the i7-960 is only $200 @ MC as well. If you already have the board... well, I would probably do that.

I am going with "Get a 2500k/2600k and give your i7 to your kids". Sell your unused LGA1366 mobo. The reason I didn't vote Option 2 is because an i7 (1st gen) CPU + Ram is barely cheaper than a 2500k + mobo + ram. In that case, I'd take the 2500k. But for SETI, you'll want 2600k since it runs 8 threads 🙂

If you intend to run SETI most of the time on this system, then I suppose that a Core i7-950/960 for $199 at MicroCenter + your unwrapped mobo would be cheapest choice and faster than 2500k.

I live in San Antonio, we don't have a microcenter. And unless I just happened to be driving by a microcenter in Dallas/Houston/San Fran (going there this weekend) I would rather pay the extra $$ to avoid the hassle and buy online.

I guess a final option could be to check out a gulftown. Oops, still $500, never mind. $259 for an i7 950 at newegg would probably be my first option if I had to buy it today, but hopefully something better between now and BF.

It's just hard to justify 2600 k compared to 2500 or i7 9x0, you get a lot more points from gpus than cpus in DC apps now, anyway.

why not get an i3 for $100? it would have better performance than your core 2 system. that way when ivy bridge comes out you can upgrade to that and dump the i3.

It's not enough better than the q6600 after overclocking to be worth the hassle to me to upgrade it. Besides, how much faster does mom need to read her yahoo mail? 😉

Of course, if I wanted to open tons and tons of .zip files then I might look at BD more closely...

Upgraded sig, I'm putting all the old stuff up for sale. If I sell it all then the decision is made for me to go 2500k/2600k, if I don't or can't get enough $$ for everything then I'll probably just slap together something with whatever is left.

its worth it enough to dump the obsolete DDR2 while it still has value. since DDR3 is cheap right now you could probably use that money without paying much extra.

I'm in the, just buy a new motherboard camp. Newegg has a Gigabyte P45 board for $80, that would be the cheapest solution to get running again. (Yes, I can tell you have an itch to upgrade. But do you want new and shiny, or cheap?)

Honestly, I prefer cheap. However, I've already sold the p6t + x3350 for $145, and I still have the 2x1gb ddr2 to sell. So I can use that money to get a new cpu, or I can also sell the x58 sli and go SB. Either way it isn't going to cost me much and I'll have a working computer that is significantly faster than the old one.
