Iowa deploys new tax

Story here.

I knew the Department of Revenue was desperate but this is pretty ridiculous. Nice to know that the ones purchased with food stamps are exempt though.

Yeah, I read about this yesterday. It's pretty silly but hey - the people here are getting what they voted for. They voted for the tax and spend socialists, and that's exactly what they are getting. Hopefully they'll realize their mistake and make a better choice next time. 🙂

Maybe they can also have a tax on colorful Indian Corn ears they use for thanksgiving decorations. Lets not forget the bales of hay used for decorations as well. We need another high tax on flowers and decorative plants.

Eat the seeds and then you don't have to pay the tax!!

This law seems to give a new twist to the the meaning of "Trick or Treat".

"If we advertise that pumpkins are used primarily for decorative purposes, then we have to tax them as such," she said. "If we advertise them as edible products, then we do not have to tax them."

So how F'ing hard is it to avoid the tax?

I don't see the big deal. Just advertise them as "pumpkins" instead of Jack 'o Lanterns.

Otherwise the tax dept is correct. If they aren't used as food, they shouldn't get the exemption.

Oh God! Think of the children. Oh no, not Pumpkins, not halloween!

This is actually fair and reasonable; pumpkins are not a food in the general use and therefore not exempt like food is, I don't see what the big deal is.

When was the last time you bought a pumkin to eat?

Ok, now how many times have you bought one to carve and stick a candle in?

Yes. If one reads the article, one notes that this tax is only for pumpkins sold as decorations or carving; those specified as a food item (and nobody really bakes with the big ones that we carve) are exempt from this.

What if I buy them for both? We carve ours out then cook the seeds and eat.
Another layer of inefficiency built into the system. I love how one can apply for the tax filling out the forms. Honestly, what if everybody filled out the forms? Think the tax could pay for the rebate checks that are sent out?

It is inefficient. They should not have forms. Anybody spending the time to fill out a form for a few cents of tax should be minced and used as fertilizer anyway. Can I fill out a form if I buy glue but intend to eat it?

Is glue considered food in any shape or form? If I lived in Iowa, I would fill out the form for the very fact it is pure idiocy to try and collect a tax on a produce item that may not be used for food.

As compared to the spend and borrow fascists we've had for the past 7 or so years?

Psstt - this is STATE level in case you didn't notice. Our last Governor pilliaged all the misc funds to pay for his BS because we have a balanced budget law(of sorts) and now this one has to repay the stolen funds plus pay for all his new BS. I guess the cig tax increase and "tax amnesty" didn't bring in the revenue needed so they have to find something else to tax.

Most "carving" pumpkins are not the same type as the pumpkins that one uses for food/cooking.
