Iowa Democrats Flee in Protest

I don't care which party is doing it, this is simply unacceptable for elected reps to do. These people should be summoned and where they're supposed to be at within 8 hours. For the second offense they should lose their office and be permanently banned from holding any job offered by that State.

Disgusting.

Didn't one of the parties in Texas do the same thing and went to Oklahoma?

Texas Democrats in 2003 fled to New Mexico.

Can't place my finger on it, but there seems to be something similar in all of these cases....

I was just reading this, it seems the Democrats new political tactic is to run away like little girls.
How horrible that the Republicans want to add 2nd Amendment protections to their State Constitution and recognize the right of self defense.

So Republicans want to make killing someone OK if you claim you believed they were threatening?

I shouldn't be legally required to flee if someone comes into my home and threatens my life. Currently, if I were to use deadly force against such an individual before trying to flee I could be charged with a felony. Personally, that isn't going to stop me from putting a bullet in their head but for others, this could be the matter of life in death. While they are busy contemplating the consequences the perpetrator kills them or a family member.

Under what authority?

If you fear for your life, yes. That is how the majority of states gun laws work, here is the actual description of the bill from the article:

The bill specifically says that a person is presumed to be justified in using deadly force if the person reasonably believes that deadly force is necessary to avoid injury or risk to his or her life.

Here is the current law:

"Iowa’s current law allows potential victims to use deadly force against a perceived threat only if an alternative course of action also entails “a risk to life or safety.”

There is absolutely nothing unreasonable with the proposed law which has been passed in numerous other states and amazingly none of them have turned into the wild wild west. I know that law abiding citizens abiding by the law and being generally reasonable is an odd concept but believe it or not thats usually how it is in the real world.

Under what authority?

Failure to perform their duties when they were sworn into office.

Maybe a recall election - they just need to look next door on how to handle it. 😛
Maybe get a certain ATer for a consultant on the best way to recall elected people from office early that do not perform up to expectations

You can justify pretty much any killing by saying you believed your life was in danger. The burden would be on the prosecutor to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that your belief was unreasonable.

Not if you live in a state where you have a Duty to Retreat which I think Iowa is.

This has to be the one of the most asinine laws ever invented BTW.

Ohio has a use of deadly force law too, but in most cases arrests the shooter and charges him with murder anyway. He then has to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a lawyer and must prove in court his justification. In the meantime, he loses his job and maybe his house. Sometimes they even get convicted when I feel sure that they were justified.

Good to see some people are out there trying to protect the criminals...they're people too you know🙄

You really fear this outcome? You really think this law opens up the doors to free-for-all murder sprees?

And it is handed over to a jury to make the determination. Do you not have faith in our legal system?

Funny how so many states have what are known as "stand your ground laws" and none of this has materialized. I rolled my eyes when I read this:
The bill would make the state part of the “Wild, Wild West,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

We've been hearing this from the left since the dawn of time. Point to one instance of a state being anything resembling the wild west. I'm talking gun-fights from legal owners of firearms over trivial issues, shoot-outs, that kind of thing. Nope! It. Has. Never. Happened. And we've had decades to see if it would. Crime is going down nationwide, and isn't stopping. Yet gun laws have gotten more and more lax!

Time for the left to shut up about the "wild west". It's an ancient and long-disproven argument, and frankly makes them look like fucking morons. For the being the supposed party of science, they sure hate facts that don't go their way.

Much like the Republicans are on the wrong side of the gay marriage debate and will eventually lose, the Democrats are on the wrong side of the gun control debate. The gun control movement in the US is dead. They can either go kicking and screaming or accept it and move on. It appears they'll be doing the former :awe:

This tactic is silly. It's basically a filibuster by quorum. They may not like the bill, but if it's really that bad, the populace will vote the Republicans out and have the law reversed.

That is how the law reads in numerous states already. Can you please give me a real world example of what you are talking about? Thanks.

PS: The word "reasonable" has actual meaning. As in, would other people in the same situation have reacted in the same way. If the jury doesn't believe so then they can and will convict you.
