It's impossible to post a thread on a topic like this one without going off topic.

You are better off not posting a thread that goes nowhere. Linking to an article from a fanboy site doesn't help either.

Sites and forums whose members choose names like "mac4life" or avatars with android logo pissing on the apple logo aren't a good source of objective info.

It'll be interesting what happens to Android phone sales now that the iphone is available on Verizon.

I think the biggest factor in Android's phone market share gains is availablity, not people choosing Android over iOS.

Android phones are available on all the major carriers, until recently iphone was only on one carrier, and it wasn't even the largest carrier. That makes the iphone's market share rather incredioble.

Going forward Android needs to change to keep it's momentum. It can go 2 ways, become a better OS, more polished, more sophisticated, ie more like iOS;

or, it can go cheaper. Become the cheap alternative smartphone os. Personally, I think this is what will happen, which means iOS will always be the smartphone standard bearer.

Android has been outselling iPhone internationally on just about every carrier. The Thunderbolt is outselling the iPhone 4 on Verizon right now. I don't get why some people think it's even remotely possible for the iPhone to completely turn the world upside down when it joins a new carrier, it's a very run of the mill phone by today's standards.

If the Thunderbolt is outselling the iphone at one supplier, Verizon, at one moment, now, you need to consider what that means, not jump to a conclusion that it means more than it does.

1. Is it even true ? Pretty hard to say unless Verizon releases the data. Have they ?

2. Thunderbolt is brand new and the first 4g phone on Verizon. Likely means it sells very hot at first, but will that last ?

3. 4G. I don't know how this has worked out at Sprint, if people are generally happy with it. Or if they aren't maybe Verizon will be better. My point being, is it enough better that the average consumer cares about it ?

my boss just replaced his (and his wifes) blackberries with thunderbolts. i asked him if he had looked at the ip4 and he pretty much told me he needed a phone for work, not a toy. lol. i have a droidX and all our PMs have droid1s. it was inevitable he went to android i think.

What kind of work is a Thunderbolt better for than an iphone ?

Neither one seems very work-oriented to me.

Let's go back to our RAZR's! Or the KRAZR's! Or what about that cell phone that feels like a stone?

Smartphone market share measurements are a bit fucked up. Android has the largest share, but obviously there are plenty of Android phones about. The only phones with iOS are the iPhone and iPad (well the 3G models). I'm sure that on handset/manufacturer terms at least, the iPhone wins hands down.

The idea of a work smartphone seems like BS IMO. Practically all smartphones by design have unlimited e-mail accounts, Calendars, MS Exchanges apps that can be downloaded, etc. What more does a worker want?

The iPhone's selling point is largely apps, but it's as good a "work smartphone" as any IMO.

dude... iPhone just works. Without any extra "rooting" and it works good. End of story!

yeah, but the iphone's exchange client kicks android's a$$. when i first went to android from my 3gs and configured my work email i took it off a day later because it wasn't worth the hassle

That's pretty sad considering the iPhone isn't like a super nice Exchange system or anything. Android's is so meh that it's pathetic. Come on.

What is more is that ActiveSync works on Android and iOS, so I don't get the issue.

Yes it works, but on ios it supports push email to subfolders in exchange mailboxes. On Android with subfolders you have t o go to the folder and pull the emails. And I think it was exchange calendars that workeda lot better on ios than Android

and just found out that yahoo push mail is not supported on android, unlike the iphone

Well, since the other thread got locked because apparently, it still dealt with "marketshare" somehow, I'll repost the press release here:

http://comscore.com/Press_Events/Pr...tform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S

So there you go. If iPad and iPod were accounted for, iOS install base would be 59% higher than that of Android.

Note: Android's marketshare in smartphone sector is still higher.

not news really. Everyone knew iOS has greater market share if you include iPod Touch and iPad, it's a no brainer.

It's more install base than marketshare. Marketshare implies that it occupies a part of the market exclusively, which might not be true since there are people who own an iPad with an Android smartphone at the same time (I know I do), or an iPod Touch with an Android smartphone, and so on.

As noted in the press release, only 4 millions or so of that base are people who own both an iPhone and an iPad.

Really, do you care about this? Does it make you feel better knowing this?

I care about debunking statistics more than the actual statistics. But it doesn't particularly make me feel better or anything of the sort. Should it?

This is clearly more about how statistics have been shown regarding the mobile sector of the industry than the state of these devices or platforms themselves. Moving forward, my company and many others who are looking to expand their business into the near future will have hard numbers to convince us what our priorities are. So yes, this is important to me, and I'm posting it because I think it might be helpful to someone else.

Well, not meant to quote this directly. But now that ComScore got their Europe results, I may have to bring a point to this statement:

http://www.comscore.com/Press_Event...nes_Tablets_and_Other_Connected_Media_Devices

It'll be interesting if only phones were accounted for. It either means that iPod Touch and iPad devices sell far better than iPhone, or your statement might have been... inaccurate.

Considering Apple posted their recent earning statements, it didn't seem to be the case that iPod Touch and iPad sold significantly better than iPhone. Then again, the numbers didn't specifically state where.
