iOS 8

I had a problem with accounts not accepting passwords (not using keychain, just normal apps with passwords like Facebook, GMail) after upgrading to the iPhone 6. I just did a backup, then signed into the new phone. I hadn't had that happen before (from the 4 to the 5), so maybe iOS handles the authentication differently now. I had to remove accounts and readd them to get my working passwords to work.

Also, what I haven't tried yet and am hoping isn't broken, is my Blizzard authenticator. I use the app and I really hope it didn't get borked.

From what I can tell based upon my experiences and others, it will only still function if you've used a restore code in the past. This is my guess based upon the fact that it has always worked for me through upgrades, but I used a restore code after some previous switch. I recall another user in PC Gaming reporting that his didn't work, and that was my only deduction on what we've done differently. I guess it makes sense since the restore code would probably overwrite the device-based code, which means it would carry over in your settings.

iOS 8.0.1 is out but beware. Some people have been having cellular and Touch ID issues.

- Fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available on the App Store
- Addresses an issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode
- Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library
- Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
- Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages
- Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases
- Fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups
- Fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari

^^ Mashable and everyone else are reporting massive issues including both not being able to make calls and losing Touch ID functionality on the 6+.

And is anyone else having issues with battery life on iOS8? I posted it in the 6 thread, but may be more specific to iOS 8. Battery issues are nothing new when upgrading operating systems, but I swear my iPhone 4 (4 years old) has better battery life than my brand new 6. Doing nothing other than texting, it'll last maybe 2 days? My 4 could last almost 4.

I've done a total drain and recharge, didn't seem to help. I'd always notice the Location arrow on extremely often - all the time, even when I'm just laying in bed. Turned off Motion Calibration and Reset Location Settings...those were rumored to help. Will see how it goes after this (have turned off quite a bit of other Location services), but just seeing what everyone else is experiencing.

Apple's beta testing kinda sucks it seems.

EDIT:

Yup. They've already pulled 8.0.1.

I'm not entirely surprised. The iPhone 4 had decent battery life. Much longer than the 4S for example. However, are you using the 6 more, since it's so new?

A friend of mine with the iPhone 6 got hit with this. No cellular support at all. No calls. Not even SMS or MMS. This is on Rogers in Canada.

DIdn't know battery life went down after the 4. And no, not using the 6 more. 🙁

IIRC, Apple didn't admit it in its specs, but it was commonly observed, which is not a surprise since the 4 and 4S are essentially exactly the same aside from the dual-core CPU in the 4S.

So, the switch from the 4 to 4S meant gaining twice the CPU, but with no change in the battery.

The 4S was a much faster phone for surfing and what not, but didn't have the same standby time.

How is iOS8 on the iPad 4? Worthwhile upgrade? I tried upgrading over the weekend but the update wouldn't download no matter how many times I tried so I gave up.

So installing 8 on the 4S is not advisable?
I personally wouldn't necessarily recommend it right now on the 4S or iPad 2 or iPad mini non-Retina (or iPod touch). Usable, but noticeably more lag. And it's quite buggy.

Fast on the 5 and of course the 5s though.

any news if it's safe?

i'm interested in the 3rd party keyboard fixes. swiftkey is pretty fucking buggy as of right now.

sometimes when i click a text area the keyboard simply does not pop up.

sometimes the default keyboard will pop up and i have to switch to the swiftkey one, even though i have it set to default to it.

then when texting, the keyboard will be up when i click on a message but it won't be scrolled all the way to the bottom, so i have to scroll down to see the latest messages.

hope both of those are fixed.

I've had 4, 5 and 6. The 4 had the best battery life by far. The 5 and 6 seem about equal, maybe slightly better on the 6. Then again, it's new and my 5 was 2 years old.

Good to know, won't be updating right away.

Is there a way to change the stock keyboard? Both 6s support extra buttons while in landscape, but I would rather have something like the iPad's split keyboard. I sure as heck don't need that huge emoji keyboard button. :|

Speaking of the keyboard, I think they really messed it up in iOS 8. Apart from the unnecessary buttons on the 6+, the issue is really the correction algorithm. It's just god awful now! The corrections that it made before were fine. Of course, it would try to correct obscure things, but I expected that. What it did do well was realize when you hit keys slightly off, and it would change it to the correct word. Now, it isn't anything close, and it's especially worse if you happen put an extra space in there. :$

Oh, and I had the keyboard refuse to enter text while in landscape mode earlier tonight. That was fun. 😛

I too find the correction algorithm of the new stock keyboard below par. However if you turn off that new predictive keyboard with the word options, and just use the old style meyboard without the suggested word options, the correction seems to be similar to the keyboard in iOS 7.1.2. So I guess the keyboards either use different correction algorithms, or else the new keyboard with the suggested word options is waiting for more input from word selection by the user to learn, leading to problems when you first use it.

tl;dr

The new style keyboard in iOS 8 with word suggestions has inferior auto correct to iOS 7. However, if you use the old style keyboard it behaves like the old style keyboard in iOS 7.

You can uninstall the Emoji keyboard!

Settings > General > Keyboards > Keyboards > swipe to the left delete any that you don't want.

I restored from a backup, and haven't really noticed any auto-correct issues on my 5.

You can turn off the predicted words?! Oh thank goodness. That was driving me crazy.😱
