Instead of "Hey, can you guys take me off this thread 🙂 ";
it'll be "Hey, can you guys put me back on this thread 🙁 "

(actually, i'm not sure; good question, tho.)

Do not try to update your iDevices with Yosemite yet. Apparently a new version of iTunes 12 is required. People have had problems, getting their iDevices stuck in DFU mode.

However, on other OS X versions, you can install iTunes 11.4 which was released yesterday. However, on my Mavericks machine I didn't install 11.4 and it all worked fine.

New Yosemite iTunes 12 beta available now.

One thing that I thought was interesting (and didn't seem to get much publicity) was that Apple is now allowing third party apps access to the full WebKit engine that Safari is using including the JIT on iOS 8. Chrome, etc, would then be able to run at the same speed as Safari.

Swiftkey can't come soon enough. I hate not having swipe, typing is a slow, two handed affair on iPhones right now. 🙁

That was the lynchpin for me to even consider moving back to iOS. After having swype/swiftkey available to me for years on Android, going back to my wife's iPhone and having to hunt and peck keys feels like I'm going back to the stone age.

I agree, and it's going to be so much better for iPads too.

One thing I hate about Apple's keyboard is the case doesn't change between lower and upper. It's always upper case, so the only way to know if it's really upper case is the shift key colour changes, which is not always easy to see if my thumb is in the way.

The behaviour is still the same in iOS 8.

I get the impression there may be more stuttering here and there when navigating iOS 8 on my iPad 2 vs iOS 7.

In contrast, on the 5s, everything is extremely speedy.

To speed things up on the iPad 2, I already had Reduced Motion in iOS 7, but now I've Reduced Transparency in iOS 8 as well. With both of these options on, the iPad 2's performance feels decent again.

Unfortunately, it's much more utilitarian-looking with transparency turned down.
Using the iPad 2 a bit more today, it seems that even with both Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency, it's a bit more laggy than iOS 7 was with just Reduce Motion.

But it's still much, much less laggy than say an iPhone 4 on iOS 7.

what deos grayscale and invert colors look like? or does one disable the other?
It looks crappy IMO.

How wedded to the jailbreak are you? I don't jailbreak my iPhones, so iPhone jailbreaks are meaningless to me.

However, iOS 8 feels like an incremental update to me. Some nice features, but not a huge change overall.

The major updates to iOS 8 are app-related, but there are no apps for it yet.

Eug, would you say 8 is worth the improvement over JB 7.1.2? I do have Yosemite on all my machines.

I tried beta 2 and 3 and was like ew

It's definitely incremental, not a huge change. And it's still a bit buggy in a few spots.

With Yosemite you do get Handoff (if your machines support it) and also integrated SMS/MMS support within iMessage on iPads and Macs. That's a big deal IMO if you use iMessage (but I don't use iMessage).

There are also a few usability improvements such as the favourite contacts menu built into the multitasking window. TouchID may also be a touch (get it?!) faster.

However, even though it flies on my 5s, it's also a bit laggier on older iDevices like my iPad 2, so keep that in mind. Hopefully that will get corrected to some extent by 8.1.

Overall, if I were in your shoes and had a JB 7.1.2 with JB-only apps that I needed and wanted, I'd stick with that, esp. with an older iDevice.

Plus, there's no guarantee that iOS 8 will be jailbroken soon. I did read somewhere that iOS 8's security holes have been mostly plugged, and so I would also suspect that the jailbreak target exploits have also been mostly plugged.

Safari now lets you request the desktop version if a site. Finally.
I didn't know that. I did a search and now I do see it. Awesome! However, the way it renders the option menu for that right now is quite ugly. Take a look at the top third of the screen. You'll see a faint grey "Request Desktop Site" option there.

Also, I don't know how to reverse it without manually choosing the Mobile Site option if it's there.

Another feature I like is separate windows for private browsing. www.theglobeandmail.com tracks articles read, and after a certain number it blocks access. However, if you use a private browser, it doesn't. In iOS 7 it was all-or-none thing to use private browser windows. If you chose private, they'd all be private. In iOS 8 private and non-private browsers are in separate "virtual desktops".

Another nice feature for Safari is if you go to the + button and instead of tapping it to create a new tab, if you hold it down, it shows the last bunch of sites you visited even if you've already deleted the tabs. It's a history of sorts.

Does it still work on a 4s? It's aging a bit.

I've JB anyways, probably will not upgrade.
I don't have a 4S, but yes, yes it does. I do have the iPad 2 which also has an A5 in it, but it's clocked 25% faster than the A5 in the 4S. However, it already lags on the iPad 2, so I can only imagine it lags even more on the 4S.

Godammit I had been wondering how to do that, and tried just now and looks like it's been there for iOS7 as well. Thx!

(Should just start long-pressing everything and see what happens

*edit*
And just like that found something new -- in safari, on your favorites screen, you can hold down on icons and rearrange them from there. Like jiggly mode for apps but without the jiggle.

Happy iOS 8 day!

Some tips:

To turn on and off the predictive text in the keyboard, press and hold the Emoji button.

It reduce lag in Safari, turn off "Preload Top Hit". It's lagless on my iPhone 5s, but there is considerable lag on the iPad 2 unless I turn off "Preload Top Hit".

Some iPhone 5s iOS 8.0 benches. Not sure what the results would be on iOS 7.

ios 7.1.2 on a 5S 6,2 model.

Geekbench
Single core - 1406
Multi - 2407

Basemark
Medium - 20745
High - 13544

3D Mark
Unlimited - 14925

Not a huge difference.

Thanks. Yeah, not a huge difference. I only did the tests once, so maybe it was just a fluke that Geekbench was over 2500 and 3DMark was over 15000 on the first try.

BTW, a few big news sites have already posted iOS 8 GM links for all the iDevices. The iOS update will come later today, but the servers will likely be hammered.

can anyone confirm how ios 8 is on 5s before i tell my bro to go ahead and update?
i hate to see a perfectly good phone being slowed down just so he's persuaded to get iphone6
