I think I'm going to hold out til 8.1 or so, my 5S is for work and don't wanna test the waters when I'm hearing a lot of buggy comments.

I hear ya. My company has its own app and when 7.x came out it broke the app. I can only assume 8 will do the same. I am going to test in on my ipad but the dl is taking way too long.

Downloaded it last night...didn't get much of a chance to mess with it this morning on my iPad. The DL did take close to 1.5 hours.

Anyone try out Swype? How does it compare to Swiftkey? Worth the $1?

My little complaint about swiftkey is that in the messages app it pushes the bottom of the messages up so you can't see the last message unless you scroll back down, every time you bring up the keyboard.

iOS 8 adoption has been slower. I wonder if it has to do with the large amount of space needed.

My phone is fine, but I think I'm seeing a bit of a performance hit on my ipad air. It's most noticeable in safari, where sometimes the scrolling gets a bit jerky on pages that never did that before.

Hmmm... That's concerning, and Brandon Chester did note something similar for his Retina mini. the 5S flies, but I guess the much higher resolution iPads get bogged down. Hopefully the A8 in the 2014 models compensates for this, and an OS update (8.0.5?) addresses the performance issues to a certain extent on previous models.

http://anandtech.com/show/8321/the-ios-8-review/8

In terms of UI smoothness, the experience on the iPhone 5s is as fluid as it always has been. With the improvements to areas like Spotlight Search it may be that iOS 8 is actually smoother overall on the 5s than iOS 7.1 was. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the experience on iPad. As an early iPad Mini with Retina Display adopter, I was never really satisfied with the UI performance under iOS 7, especially given how much I paid for the tablet. It was certainly not up to par with my 5s. Though much of that has to do with the significantly higher resolution display, I still didn't feel it was as smooth at it should have been given the performance of Apple's A7 SoC. iOS 7.1 remedied this in many ways, but some areas such as the multitasking drawer and notification center would still drop below 60fps at times.

Agreed. Web surfing is noticeably slower on both my iPad Air and Mini Retina.

Fortunately that's not an issue for me, as I don't like Swype type keyboards for example.

I do want the animated GIF keyboard though. ;)

Gifmoji

i'm with you on not caring for the swype type keyboards. I think it's mostly work related for me tho. i gotta be on a lot of devices and all are regular touch keyboards so i'd rather be more efficient with that method (and actually never thought of the as being so slow that i thought "man, i need a new type of input")

It's an improvement over the iOS keyboard to me, but it's not up to Android standards.

  • Only two themes available (light/dark) on my iPad. The gf's 5s has like five themes for some reason, none of them are great.
  • The first word guess only seems to show up on the typing area, not the little Swype bar? This makes it impossible for me to add anything to the dictionary that I would actually want to add.
  • Settings in general are gimped compared to Android. Don't expect to customize anything.
  • It seems to take a two-step process (through the iOS keyboard?) to reach emojis. Annoying.
  • Swype button doesn't select the entire word like Android does. This is one of my most used features.
Overall, I'm gonna keep using it, but I wouldn't if I had to use it on my everyday device. Hopefully improvements are coming quick.

Yeah, iPad2 has been like molasses since i installed the GM last week.

My 'production' 5c got the update this am. It has been a little jerky. Also I have issues with iMessage (see Eug's thread).

So no number row on the stock or Swiftkey keyboards? iPad and new iPhone screens are more than big enough for this, really hope it's added.

Wow Swiftkey on iOS is totally different. They don't force you to use numpad. I'm guessing Apple forces a standard layout on the keyboard. I wish the Android version would look like that...

But they force you to not have a lot of things the Android version can do. The swipe style typing is the only thing I like about the iOS version. No voice input key, no comma on the left option, no number shortcuts, no resizing, etc.

And my ipad 3 (original riPad). It's a noticeable delay from taps to action, and initial load of the page also seems to lag.

5S seems ok, but for enterprise management (mobile iron) it seems to have borked some things.

i'd think part of it has to do with people simply waiting for their ip6 to come tomorrow.

Also, with other updates, I got a notification that an iOS update was available. I didn't with iOS 8. I just happened upon the AT review and checked myself to see if it was available for everyone. People don't update unless they are told. 99% of smartphone users don't go around scouring the internet looking for the release date of updates.

Ug, ios8 totally made my ipad 2 useless.
Hmmm... How so, and in general, or just specific apps? Did you turn off all the eye candy (animation, transparency) in the accessibility settings, and turn off top hit preloading in Safari?

I do agree that 7.1.2 is probably the sweet spot for the iPad 2, but I find with all the eye candy and the preloading off, iOS 8 is OK on the iPad 2.

To put it in different terms, the iPad 2 is better with iOS 8 than the iPhone 4 is with iOS 7.

BTW, I also wonder if turning off search engine suggestions and spotlight suggestions might speed things up a bit too.

You can fix that by disabling the iOS keyboard.

Anyway my question was not about iOS vs android, but Swype vs Swiftkey on iOS, I was interested in whether Swype is worth $1 over Swiftkey which is free.

I'm not a Swiftkey user. You asked about Swype and Android Swype is a baseline that most are familiar with or can at the very least understand. I gave my opinion on iOS Swype at this point. Sorry that you didn't like how I did it.

Update was kind of a pain in the butt on my iPad 4. I had 2.9GB free (16gb device), and it wanted a whopping 5.8gb to install! So I decided to use iTunes instead. I had never used iTunes because I've never needed it. Installed it on my Windows machine, connected, it sycn'd and then it saw the update. But when I tried it said there were things on the iPad that weren't on my computer and I should back them up first. So I did a manual backup. About 75% of the way through that the iPad, which had 2.9GB free to start the process somehow filled up, and it stopped saying there was no more free space. I couldn't figure out why, but suddenly the ipad was full. So I went in and deleted a few apps, and backed it up again, and it finally worked. Then I was finally able to install the update via itunes. Still no idea how clicking Manual backup made it go from 2.9gb free to full.

For a buck, just buy it and try it! :)

Did apps get sync'd from the computer to the iPad?
