iOS 8 has full disk encryption

Does that mean performance will suffer on devices like the iPhone 5 that don't have hardware AES support?

Newer software will almost always be designed to run slower on older hardware. You could also say be "optimized" for newer one.

In this case, there is a real reason behind it.

yeah, but i wouldn't say it is intentional. more features requires more power.

But AES encryption is pretty nontrivial. FileVault even brings MacBooks to a crawl.
