iOS 5.1 and my iPad 1

Well, I was really hoping that the iOS 5.1 update would remove some of the very noticeable keyboard lag that iOS 5 had introduced to my iPad 1.

I wasn't really holding out too much hope for it to actually happen, but I am pleased to say that it has eliminated almost 100% of the lag! I am very happy about that ... though moreso that I might sell it in plans for getting an iPad3 at some point 🙂

So it works well now and you want to sell it?

I wonder if the original iPad will receive iOS 6 update. iPhone always gets 2 major updates...

Technically, the iPad received two major updates because it got iOS 4 and iOS 5.

But I'm sure it will get iOS 6 in some capacity.

i used to get keyboard lag when typing in URL in safari (on 4s) because it was trying to pull up suggested URLs from history.

i just tried a few now on 5.1 and don't see the lag anymore (but still pulls up the previous URLs). not bad.

I get that on occasion too with mine, good to know it's not just me. Guess I'm updating to 5.1 tonight.

I'll have to throw it on mine when I get home. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll fix my safari crashing all the damn time bug. Everytime it crashed yesterday and this morning I came closer to ordering an iPad 3. I'll get one sooner or later, but I'm holding out as long as i can.

I kept thinking the original iPad came with iOS 4, it looks like it was first shipped with iOS 3. If that's so, I don't think it will see the light of iOS 6.

Yeah, it was first shipped with iOS 3.2. I suspect the iPhone 4 will be getting iOS 6 and in that case there's no reason for the iPad 1 not to have it.

I continue to be impressed at the leap in performance ... at least as impressed as I was NOT impressed when the performance suffered at the initial upgrade. But it looks like I will not be selling the original, as it would crush the kids. And this way if I can weasel my way into a new one, I won't have to share as much.

Except the iPad 1 has half the ram which will make a big difference whether or not the device gets it or not.

I tend to ignore the hardware spec when it comes to Apple product.

Since Apple makes software for its device too, they can make old iPad run slow by simply not optimizing software for it. This is a conspiracy theory and I have no way of proving it, but I suspect they do it to some degree.

I think a lot of old devices are quite capable of running the newest software, but if Apple wants you to upgrade, they will make sure you not only feeling the itch, but the need, to upgrade.

Even with 5.1 Safari still crashes way more often than it did on 4.whatever was on there. Actually, I don't ever recall it crashing in 4.whatever.

What are you doing in Safari, it is replicable? I will try it on this end, as I don't think Safari has crashed on me once since i got my iPad.

My biggest annoyance is the tab reloading behavior, I hope that the 1GB in the Retina iPad helps with that.

I thin think it is somewhat caused by ads. Yahoo sports is almost unviewable. I have it crash on these forums quite a bit. It blows up on Edmunds.com. I have a wood working blog www.ana-white.com that I follow that will cause it to crash quite frequently. My wife uses the facebook app on it and it's almost unusable. All of those have some sort of ads that are loading up (flash or otherwise).

You'll navigate to a page, it'll start to load and then it just shuts down safari and goes back to your app menus.

Is this an iPad 1 or iPad 2?

Yes, this is why. 256MB Ram will barley load TechCruch and many other sites.

I am on Core i5 laptop w/ 4GB RAM in Chrome and Techcrunch takes forever to load, i think it has less to do with the RAM in that case and more to do with TechCrunch being kind of crummy.

I have an iPad one and wish I never put 5x on it. It was a crashing mess before 5.1, now it is just super slow compared to 4x.

Oh, and the new iPad is fucking amazing compared to the 1. It is night and day.

Yep. The only...and mean only thing that I appreciate about iOS 5.x on my first gen is for iCloud. And even with that I could live without if it meant I could remain stable under 4.x. I don't use any of the other features at all.

And yes...it's a night and day difference going from that to my 3rd gen. Speed...screen...camera...the 3rd gen is just so much more of an improvement.

I always have the suspicion that Apple cripples old hardware to sell the new. But I watched a few youtube videos, it looks like iPad 1 runs just fine with iOS 5.
