As for lag. iOS has lag it just very cleverly disguises it with animations. Even if you apply "reduce motion" it still covers the lag with a soft fade in. There's no way to use it without any animations. Unless maybe one jailbreaks it.

Yes the animations hide lags. However, in previous iPhones it wasn't always successful and even the animations themselves would stutter. There would also be frequent lags in page rendering in browsing. That's pretty much all gone with the 7.

I've jail broken previous versions of iOS and removed animations, they're not covering up lag, it's very abrupt. Have done the same with Android. Animations add lag.

I imagine every processor driven device will show lag from time to time. My Air 2 lags pretty heavily from time to time as well, and I think that device is considered to be one of the smoother ones out right now.

I have both the 7 Plus and the Air 2. The 7 Plus is way, way smoother.

It would happen for me but very rarely in animations. I thought the 6s was very good in that regard. Browsing lags did happen. I'll watch to see if the 7 does better. I think the little cores are now dedicated to animations and the like. If anything I'm finding the usable battery life on the 7 to be a significant upgrade. It seems like a lot of highly used tasks are quite a bit less power consuming.

A part of me wonders if the upgrade in battery is more due to restoring from iCloud, because it's happened that the Apple Genius suggesting restoring the phone to resolve battery issues. I tested my 6S battery and it was claimed to have 97% battery capacity. This is a pretty significant bonus for me for whatever reason.

I see. I remember they were abrupt in previous versions. But I didn't mind it. I noticed the animations are speed-ed up in iOS 10 vs 9. But I wish I could just have the whole thing without animations.

I like the animations. But the animations in earlier versions of iOS took too long. I think part of it was to hide delays, but part of it was just a design choice. As people got more used to these phones, people wanted more snappy transitions, and Apple obliged, knowing their faster SoCs could handle it.

My wife keeps saying that iOS 10 is faster than iOS 9 on her iPhone 6s. To my eye it isn't (except maybe in Safari), but the animations are indeed significantly shorter, making it seem faster at times. But, it still lags and stutters occasionally here and there (something she doesn't really notice). The experience on the 5S is similar. Animations are shorter so it sometimes makes it feel sped up, bit it really isn't (except maybe in Safari) and it still lags and stutters here and there.

All the lockscreen stuff like messaging etc seems like a big security risk...

How so? Most of apples security issues have been hacked via icloud.

You can turn it off.

This can be changed in settings.

i actually like the messages on the home screen... all you see is the current message and your reply, the history is still safely "locked" away until you unlock the phone

Yes, I left messages on my home screen too. But for those who don't you can simply turn it off.

Maybe if I decide to plan a surprise birthday party or something I'll turn it off though.

There seems to be an issue with the alarm on the home screen. It displays a huge Stop button in iOS 10, but it doesn't seem to work properly. Whenever I don't feel like getting up in the morning, it seems like I mash that darn thing about a billion and a half times until it finally reacts.

I've noticed that behavior as well, but I have found that you can turn the alarm off immediately by pressing the home button.

I'm not liking the new iPhone 7 with iOS10. I don't know if it's because the 7 is a lot faster than my 6 I had, but if I try to turn on the phone with the home button and I use a touch ID finger, it just logs in right away. Bugs the crap out of me because I set my phone on my desk and sometimes just want to check for any alerts, but it will log me into the phone.

As far as I know, the only 2 ways to get the screen to turn on (by default) are to hit either the home button or power button OR move the phone towards your face. I prefer the home button but now it pretty much just logs me in. Any way around this? I try to use a non touch ID finger but I don't always remember to do that.

No, there is no way around the fact that TouchID2 is crazy crazy fast.

For me, when I just want to look at the time or something, I pick up the phone and slant it a bit to get it to turn on the screen. I make sure that my finger isn't on the sensor if I don't want it unlocked, and I have the setting flipped so that when the screen is on, authenticating will unlock and take me to springboard.

Just use a finger that hasn't been registered. I only register my thumbs and index fingers, so I can use any of the remaining fingers or just hit the power button.

This is pretty much what I do right now, hoping they come up with something better. I guess I'll just get used to eventually though.

I just installed iOS 10.0.1 on my mother-in-law's iPhone 5. It works surprisingly well. It is quite a bit more responsive than I had predicted last year, and thus I agree with Ars' assessment. To put it another way, iOS 10 on the iPhone 5 works way better than iOS 9 on the iPhone 4S. iOS 9 on the iPhone 4S is often just painful. The iPhone 5 with iOS 10 isn't ever painful, but just stutters and lags a bit from time to time.

No, I don't see that stuttering and lag on the 7 Plus, but really, the iPhone 5 works well... with the caveat that the usual performance settings ideally should be turned on: Reduce Motion & Reduce Transparency, and a few other tweaks.

BTW, iOS 10.1 beta has no public beta yet, and I only have the free developer account, so I can't download it yet to try portrait mode. I guess I'll just have to wait a few weeks. In the meantime, here is a video of how it works:

By default it seems to be set to unlock only with a press. I'm assuming your messages etc. are available on the lock screen without unlocking the phone.

I have it set to touch to unlock which means it unlocks with just a touch. I think if one prefers that setting they should be in the habit of using the power to lock the phone manually when setting it down. However I feel the 30 second window for auto lock works for me.

I don't have that problem. Perhaps it is an issue with that particular login page.

I don't travel that much but even when I have made use of hotel WiFi on iOS it hasn't been a problem for me. Note though that a lot of hotels use the same interface, or at least a similar one. And if you're staying at the same chain, you'll probably get the same problem even if it's a physically different hotel.

So, I don't think this password capitalization issue is really an Apple issue per se.
