Sorry anantech's for asking aobut a item not related to computer hardware. I've been with anandtech forum and though this should be a big issue to ask a question about the ionic breeze filters. Do they really work as they claim. Who has one? Is it worth the money? Are they very reliable?

thanks

I was looking at these (the ratshack environizer) this past holiday season. I didn't get one because I couldn't find any user reviews on the net...and I still can't. I would love to see what you think about them if you get one. I would think that not only would it be cheaper than the ionic breeze, but it SHOULD work a little better because of the fan.

Dude, these types of filters suck!!! Get a real filter, not some "As Seen on TV" crap.

I am in the same boat.

One plus on the ionic breeze is that it doesn't have a fan that will eventually start to hum.

I know a guy at work that has a bunch of them b/c of cats and he swears by them.

If you have a Discover card, Sharper image does do the double your cashback bonus, but not sure if it limits you to 1 certificate at a time like staples does.

Originally forgot to add that around xmas when I was looking at them and a lot of online reviews, I saw a blurb about a guy in NY that had his on during 9-11. He had his AC on when the buildings came down so his apartment got a lot of the crud in it, and the apartment building was evacuated for a few days b/c of the air. When they checked his room, it was the best air quality of the entire place. I know i'm not giving his story justice, but I nearly bought one right then, but I then found out other gifts I had to get : )

I was skeptical at first, but after having it for a year, I have to say it works well at cleaning airborne particles. I'm not talking about just large dust... it picks up oils/odors/etc. I believe the difference between radioshack ones and sharper image is that ozone is released with the sharper image. Only puny amounts are released (even competitors of the ionic breeze claim the ionic breeze releases far less ozone than theirs). ozone (o3) is a disinfectant ... blah blah.. anyway.. it's nearly everywhere around us and depending on environmental conditions... to greater or lesser degree. I think if a lightning storm passes by.. it's like a billion times more ozone than the ionic breeze can gather...

I do recommend getting the large ionic breezes because my compact quadra version needs filter cleaning once or twice a week. Tons of crap gets stuck - that's how i know it works.

I would have purchased a Hepa filter, but I can't stand noise...

I once thought about looking into this one type of filter, but I decided to do a bit more research at the website of reviews. I had to do some more thinking on the whole thing and figured I should try something else. I mean, no need to waste a bunch of money if you're not sure. Anyway, when push came to shove, I said I'm going to get the other type and I have to say I'm happy about that choice. Look at the website of reviews and you might think differently. You have to make certain choices that you'll be stuck with so think about this other one. Good luck!

I've been using one in my bedroom for over a year now. It's fantastic. It doesn't need a fan... you can really feel the air moving through it. It's amazing the crap it pulls out of the air - I have to clean the rods about once a week. You can usually find refurb units on the Sharper Image website for half the retail price, which is what I purchased. My allergies don't bother me much anymore, I can breathe better, sleep better, and even don't need to dust the room as often. I believe it's a 60-day return policy on them, so go ahead and try one out if you're on the fence...

I was skeptical, but the ionic breeze seems to work pretty well at catching stuff & eliminating odors. Have used one for 2 yrs & it still works fine. No moving parts = nothing to break unless you screw up while cleaning and break off one of the electic attachments or somehting (has not been an issue for us).

Tip: use moist cloth to clean but ensure its dry before replacing or you will get the "I'm dirty" staticey sound.

One knock: watch out, because if you place it next to a wall, after a few months you may find some funky black stuff on the wall behind that does not come off easy. I have no clue what causes that, but I'm sure someone here can explain.
EDIT: oh, this is hot deals, maybe better in OT - mods?

Krofty:

The next month they retracted that report, acknowledging that their tests were geared towards the high-volume HEPA air cleans.

You can pick up the Ionic Breeze via AmEx points rewards. You can also get a price break by bidding on them at the Sharper Image Auction Website. Make sure that the unit you are bigging on has the warrenty. I have 3 of these. Two from the auction webiste, saved about $100 per unit. One from AMEx rewards program.

Isn't the sharp smell produced when using copy machines/laser printers because of the amount of ozone created?
